What kind of changes/ or lack of changes have the worlds air terminals and their occupants undergone in the past 10, 20, 30+ years? Also, a recent post referenced Eastern Airlines logos still visible on some flight monitors at ATL, are there any other visible remnants of defunct airlines out there?

Note, among other things, the more distant tree line in the Leibowitz & Deemer photos than in the Millard & Straw photos to accommodate a new runway.

Wow, I could go on forever on this topic. It's really amazing to think of how some airports have changed, especially in areas of the US that have grown in the past two decades.

Look at Orlando... in 1981, they were using two former missile barns as a terminal and boarding passengers via airstairs. Now they have a huge modern terminal that seems to be under constant expansion.

Philadelphia... until the late 1970s, it was just one terminal (the current B/C terminal used by US Airways) and three concourses: Concourse B, used by Allegheny, Northwest, American and National; Concourse C, used by Eastern and TWA; and Concourse D, used by United and Delta. In 1977-1978 the unit terminals were built, followed by Terminal A in 1991 and the latest round of expansions 2001-2002.

Phoenix was just two small terminals until 1979, when the much larger Terminal 3 opened. By 1990 the HUGE Terminal 4 was open, and it seems to be under construction all the time as well.

Atlanta... until 1980 they were using the grossly undersized terminal built in 1961 - dark, cramped and with narrow little ground-level concourses.

The list goes on and on... SLC, LAS, DTW, etc...

Atlanta's 1961 Terminal only had one narrow ground level concourse, the A concourse, where UA, PI, SO, and NW were located. EA and DL had elevated concourses with jetways, that had "rotundas" at the end of them. The concourses were much like those opened at ORD in 1962 (D,E,F,G,H, and J).

Manchester (MAN) has seen huge expansion with terminal 2 and a west apron and Cargo Terminal built.

I remember flying AA from SJU-EWR in 1997, and I believed we arrived in A-3. Back then the terminal was coated in red TWA carpeting and was very empty. I remember a flight departing for St. Louis about that time.

I came back to A-3 in 2001 when I flew Midway to MCO (via RDU) and the terminal was shared by US AIRWAYS and AA. The terminal was decorated in various AA symbols and apparel.

I hear that US AIRWAYS was in A-2 for a while (1990's,) with more gates and served to more destinations than just the hubs. By 2000 TWA was in A-2. Looks like they did a gate switch between 97-01.

I believe Terminal B at one time was served by Eastern, perhaps B-2. I have no idea what the gate displays were like or anything.

Does anybody know in the 1980s if airlines had digital displays for gate departures (Like at the departing gate.) Specifically PA and EA? That would be interesting to find out.

The Atlanta 1961 terminal was not set up that way at all.

Eastern used Concourses A, B and part of Concourse C. All of those concourses were ground-level, although Eastern had attached jetways to Concourse A and later built a second-level wing there for L1011 aircraft. All flights at Concourses B and C boarded through airstairs outside.

Piedmont and Southern also used Concourse C, and Concourse D (also ground-level with outdoor boarding) was used by United, TWA, Northwest, Braniff and National (and Delta during peak periods). Northwest later added two jetways to its gates there.

The concourses you're thinking of were Concourses E and F, which were second-level and had jetways at every gate. Those were always used by Delta - to the best of my knowledge, an Eastern aircraft never came near them. They had the rotundas at the end that were added in the late 1960s.

If you want a vintage terminal, look at SAT Terminal 2 (before they tear it down, that is) -- totally single-level design on the terminal side (turn right for ticketing, left for baggage claim), and a fairly low airside, too...

The terminal there reminds me of OAK Terminal 1, but smaller...

Good call on SAT Terminal 2. Hard to believe at one point it was the airport's only terminal, before T1 was opened in 1984.

For most of the 1970s, Braniff, American and Mexicana used the satellite that today is used by all carriers. Eastern and Southwest used the west concourse and Texas International used the east concourse (which has been demolished). Continental used a separate concourse that had been tacked onto the ticketing wing and is now also demolished.

After Deregulation, everyone was crowded into little old T2 - American, Delta, United, Braniff, Mexicana, TWA, USAir, Piedmont, Continental, Frontier, Ozark, Eastern and Western.

When T1 opened in 1984, Southwest, Delta, Western, Mexicana, Braniff, United and Mexicana moved over there.

the building I am in right now is the ORIGINAL terminal here at PVD. it's the size of a house! 3 sidewalks leading to holes in an arched chain link fence on the airside mark the 3 "gates" that passeners used to board DC3's and the similar 1940/50's vintage craft.

These come to mind:

SEA: Concourse A is under renovation and is home to a lot of the LCC's. The North Satellite is still largely UA (the outside of the satellite still makes it look like opening day 1972, and the south satellite doesn't look much better on the outside), but also has an Air Canada flight, Alaska/Horizon lease gates there now, and I've heard USAir is moving there to tie in with UA, and they have redone the area around N9 and the concessions area. Concourse C is still American and Alaska, but it's been updated and looks better. Finally, in the main terminal, the area near baggage claim and the subway areas have all been redone. Probably more I'm missing, but that largely covers it.

ORD - New Int'l. terminal, and of course B & C for UAL, finished in 1987 I think? I love those terminals! I'm sure AA has updated/expanded their areas as well at ORD to keep pace with UA.

IAD: Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe UA had some remodelling done at C and part of D, and now have their own customs/immigration area at the end of C (C1-C8 I believe), so that they don't have to send customers on people movers to the main terminal to customs and then have them go back to C/D for connecting flights. UA also uses D, as does AA, LH, bmi, and a few others I think.

SFO: International Terminal was built in the late 80's, and then now it's been closed for remodeling again, now that the NEW int'l terminal is open, which the old one can't hold a candle to from what I gather...

PDX: The whole airport was basically destroyed in stages and rebuilt, and what a HUGE improvement! New control tower, new parking garages, Where D and E are now, used to be a concourse with numbered gates that resembles C & D at IAD today. Delta basically owned D and used to run their Asian routes from there, and there was TWA and Continental also, which CO is still there. HP I think leases a gate in D also. The LH nonstop to FRA uses one of the port gates, as does Hawaiian and Mexicana. UAL owns E, and I believe part of the plan is to eventually extend the E concourse. The MAX light rail line has a station there, too, opened in either 2001 or 2002, not sure which. Overall, PDX is a great airport to fly through now...they've made great strides, and the drive in to the terminal is very nicely landscaped, thanks to the airlines that pay high landing fees!

Also at PDX, the A, B, and C concourses have just been completed. Horizon uses A, Alaska and NW use B and C, as does Southwest, and probably F9 also.

Those are the ones I know about, anyways. Whew!

I did a little webpage showing some 80s vintage photos of Phoenix's old terminal one and what terminal two looked like in the mid-late 80s. It underwent a considerable airside expansion in the years leading up to the opening of Terminal 4. I just need to dig around for the URL... which I have forgotten.

Eastern operated out of B-2 and B-3 concourses, they had all those gates. Today those two concourses make up the International Arrivals hall.

Eastern airlines right after the strike in '89 consolidated all their EWR operations into B-2, the Port Authority took control of B-3 (closest to Terminal C) and turned it into a International arrivals hall (prior to that EWR's International arrivals consisted of a two gate stub at Terminal C where their new C-3 Concourse is located).

After Eastern shut down for good in '91 the Port Authority took over B-2 from Eastern, in '94 they started combining the B-2 and B-3 concourses into one large International arrivals hall which opened in 1996.

Also at PDX, the A, B, and C concourses have just been completed. Horizon uses A, Alaska and NW use B and C, as does Southwest, and probably F9 also.

Slight corrections/more info:
- Concourse C was completed most recently -- A/B were refreshed but not rebuilt. A/B/C now share a common security checkpoint (Security West)
- Northwest is on C, but has no ops on B. A is Horizon-only (and awfully cramped and dated, IMHO), and B is Alaska (and perhaps some Horizon ops?). AS also has gates on C.
- Carriers on C are indeed AS/NW/WN/F9.
- You cannot connect between A/B/C and D/E without leaving security... that's the only downside to the airport layout. Otherwise, it's gorgeous!

Ahh yes, I have fond memories of SAT Terminal 2 also as I spent many hours there in the terminal awaiting flights. Only thing I didn't like about SATs expansion was that groddy looking coloring they added to the outside of the old terminal's driveway when the new terminal got finished. I always preferred the white coloring of the terminal myself. Hopefully my CO flight in two weeks will come into terminal 2 as I'll miss it when it gets torn down.

BTW, if memory serves me correctly, didn't Continental use East Concourse with Texas International before that tacked on concourse near the ticket wings was added? I remember a couple times visiting the observation deck and seeing CO jets parking on that side. I did fly one CO flight that went through the concourse and I remember it was a bit odd as it was one portion I hadn't seen before and I believe only ticketed passengers could enter and exit that area and nobody else could (possibly the same deal with Southwest's west concourse).

My airport, OMA, has changed a bit. Early configuration from when I first remember flying into it had a north terminal with upper level jetways and a south "fork" that was at ground level with ground level access to the aircraft via airstairs (circa 1977). I remember seeing turboprops flying in to the south fork in those days. Now the south fork is gone and a south terminal that is almost a mirror image of the north one sits in its place. A complete second level was added in the 80s when the south terminal was built, with a sky bridge access to a parking garage that was added in 1984 I believe.

I'm not sure about CO using the east concourse. That was a long time ago - they very well could have. I do know I have a photo (from "Airport World" magazine in 1969) that shows the SAT terminal:

The then-new satellite (built for the 1968 HemisFair and with new customs facilities) is at center, with three jetways bearing the Braniff "BI" logo, two bearing the old American "double A-eagle" and one gate without a jetway (that I presume was used by MX.) There's an AA 707 parked at one of the jetbridges.

Beyond it are the original east and west concourses. An Eastern 720 is parked on the west concourse, and a Texas International (then it was still TTA) is on the east concourse. Beyond it is the main terminal, and then the rather crude-looking Continental concourse (which looked like a bunch of trailers tacked together). A Continental 720 and DC9, in the new 'meatball' colors, are parked there.

In the background, where T1 now sits, are a bunch of hangars and parking lots. It's definitely an unusual view, since the airport now looks so different.

I know that SAT had a plan to replace T2 with two new concourses attached to T1, but they've removed any mention of it from their website. Has that plan been shelved? They need to do something about T2, and fast -- while a marvel in it's day, I'm sure, it's now dated and not the best foot to put forward to arriving visitors.
