I live around 6-10 miles north of Cardiff (before the hills) and we always seem to get military or commercial jets flying over our house.. The two main airports with us are CWL (Cardiff) and BRS (Bristol) for commercial and RAF St Athan for Military jets does anybody know why they seem to be flying northbound?

The traffic we get is only around 3,000ft - 5,000ft so it cannot be traffic from LGW or LHR can it? I thought maybe routes to Scotland, N.Ireland and Ireland from CWL and BRS, is that possible? After all the commercial planes look like they are A320, B737 or Turbo Prop!

Have flown from CWL and BRS a few times over the years. Sounds like you live under the A25 airway which in UK terms runs from the south coast at Plymouth-ish, passing up west of Bristol and almost directly over CWL, north towards Brecon, Wrexham / The Wirral (Wallasey) then up to the Northern Lakes area.
Traffic departing BRS / CWL heading for Manchester, Scotland, Newcastle, Belfast, etc.. will pretty much all join the A25 airway.
I used to love the smell of Jet-A in the morning...
