I Want To Fly On A 747!

I know this is becoming increasingly difficult for us in the U.S. to get on a 747 flight, but this is always something I've wanted to do. Can someone suggest some inexpensive ways that I could realize this goal (other than getting a job with an airline). Are there any little known U.S. domestic runs serviced by 747s? For example, I'm pretty sure South African used to run a FLL - ATL run with a 747, but I'm not sure whether or not this was open to domestic pax. Preferably, I'd like to ride on a 747-400, but any model will do. Would appreciate the replies.

I'm not sure what United's schedule is as the moment, but they do or have 744's on DEN-LAX, DEN-SFO, DEN-ORD, IAD-LAX, IAD-SFO. I think that's about the only chance you'll have to fly a 747 in the US.

Talk to United or Northwest. They're the only airlines in the U.S. that operate the 747 today. Tell them you want to fly on a 747 and ask them where you can catch one.

Good luck.

Don't think NW operates any 747's domestically. United will be your best bet.

Yea, I just looked at NW's timetable but couldn't find any U.S. domestic 747 service. Will look at United.

United used to....I can't find any right now though...seems they've all gone 777? I guess the 744's are all going to Asia now.

Might want to get a 'cheap' fare from JFK-LHR on BA to get on a 744...just an idea.

It looks like the only U.S. domestic 747 ops are flights 857 (ORD-SFO) and 152 (SFO-ORD).

JHooper,

Begining with the November schedules, there is a UAL 744 flying Chicago to Washington, D.C. roundtrip

I'll have to check out that ORD-IAD flight. Anyway, I was surprised to see a RT from JFK-LHR on BA priced at $321.82

Also look at the Air India services JFK-LHR, ORD-LHR, EWR-CDG or even ORD-FRA starting in December. These have traditionally priced out very cheap and you are assured of a B747-400.

I wish I had taken advantage of the opportunity when I was eligible to purchase ID-90 tickets. I actually had bought one on UA from LAX to ORD for around $100, but then I ended up refunding it because I was in college and $100 was a fortune for me and I was broke. Ahhhh! Oh well...

Jhooper,
It's great to fly on a 747-400. I have got every month the opportunity to do it on long haul flights and I hope you will soon have your dream realized.
Regards. Kilavoud.

Well , I was hoping to fly on Air China's 777 but they change equipment to 747-400 . I can't complain , can I ? but I am kind of disappointed because I always wanted to try out Air China's 777 .

United also has 744s flying between ORD and LAX and ORD and SFO. One, if not two a day I think. You can get some pretty cheap fares on those flights if you keep an eye out. Right now though the fares to the west coast on United are about $400....which is crazy high and unusual.....so they'll be coming down soon.....

Man, if only I could find one priced in the $100 ballpark (even if one way), I'd buy today! (do I sound like a used car salesman?)

I flew on a VS 747 back in 1999 and it was my favourite flight. I just loved being on the massive aircraft, and the takeoff was brilliant.

You're only 747 chances within North America are on United and maybe Royal Air Maroc JFK-YUL (if the flight is not being operated by a 763).

Qantas and SAA domestic USA sectors are definate no-nos.

Failing that, your next bet would be a cheap USA-Europe flight in October/early November/early December where the airlines can't give the seats away (word of caution- London becomes expensive when all those taxes are added in).

You can get a $158.00 R/T fare on that UA ORD-IAD 744.

Purchase the R/T and fly 1-way, trash the return ticket.

Will they charge my credit card for the difference in fare if I do that, or should I pay by cash?
