We heard rumors about this coming and here it is. NW will cut its MEM capacity by 16%.

Excellent. Lighter periods of hubbing will be good for travelers in Memphis.
I wish all the hubs would lighten their heavy periods as NW is doing.

Isn't this interesting.

They did this (or something) like this before. Right?

At one time they had 4 HUGE banks a day. Wasn't that right after NW took over Republic?

Then the economy turned sour and they went to 6 banks a day much like they announced they will do in January.

Then they went back to 4 big banks a day and now its back to 6.

So which one do you think is better.

Personally I like the 6 a day. It will be good for everything, ATC and delays included.

Well, ATC delays aren't really much of an issue in Memphis, so that will be of little benefit. The 1963-era B Concourse is incredibly narrow and gets really congested, so fewer passengers per flight bank will be of benefit in that respect.

How about the Amsterdam flight? It only operates during one flight bank, and with fewer feed passengers, I would imagine demand will decrease for the flight.

I agree, ATCboy73. And when demand returns with larger load requirements NW can put on larger aircraft during those less congested hub periods and get away from the habit the carriers are in now of deluging the crowded airports with those CRJs just to say they have given the traveler more choice in departure times. Usually, though, all those little jets add to the delay problems and I'd rather have fewer choices and be certain that the flight I am on leaves on time, avoiding the stress of delays and uncertainty on the arriving end.

Those CRJs are untenable for flights over 1 hour anyway. Now NW can bring in more 757s in to MEM when demand returns!

Flyboy80,
Northwest has flights to AMS from BOS,JFK,EWR,IAD,MIA,MEM,DTW,MSP,ORD,SEA,LAX,SFO,IAH. I think this is "like" quite a few, don't you. All widebodies.

Actually, if you read the release more carefully, the purported "six" banks are really three spread-out banks; the northbound and southbound banks all leave within 30 minutes of each other. I imagine that the east-west flights will likely be timed so that they can connect to and from flights in both banks.

It does look like there will be some equipment upgrades here and there, since the number of flights will be reduced by 18% though capacity will only fall by 16%; either that or Airlink flights will be the hardest-hit. We'll have to wait until the schedules are loaded to get a good idea of how things will look in January. It looks like MEM and STL are going to be pretty similar in size after Northwest's cuts.

actually the NW flts from IAH, SFO, LAX, ORD are always operated by KLM. The EWR, IAD, MIA, MEM, flts fluctuate b/t NW & KLM, depending on the time of year, as they switch b/t them to accomodate other cities where they have large "summer" travel.

This six banks issue is no more than a complete marketing spin on the fact that they are reducing flights and capacity.

The world is really getting smaller these days

It was an a.net user who pointed that out. NW said they were reducing MEM flying by almost 70 flights per day.

At one time they had 4 HUGE banks a day. Wasn't that right after NW took over Republic?
MEM's never been much larger than it is today.

"MEM's never been much larger than it is today."

Well, in the late Republic Airlines era, nearly 200 daily MAINLINE flights operated out of the hub, which is more than double the current mainline schedule. I imagine that schedule carried on into the Northwest era by a year or two. Very quickly after the Republic merger NW started scheduling DC-10s into Memphis, and it wasn't unusual to see 747s on some of the MSP runs from time to time.

While the total number of flights hasn't changed much over the years, capacity sure has.

NW flew nearly 200 daily MAINLINE flights ex-MEM until recently.

Perhaps we'll see some more 320's/757's fan out from MEM to some of the larger markets to compensate for the loss of capacity. Would be good to see.

This "new" schedule doesn't seem a whole lot different than the 3 bank system MEM used to have, prior to adding the 4th bank.

CO has CLE
UA has IAD
AA will have STL

now NW joins the ranks as having MEM as their RJ hub....

Hopefully NW will invest some more effort back into DTW sooner or later....They've lost a lot more service than MSP has
