I am going to be in LAX from 21Oct-24Oct. Unfortunately my return flight leaves at 0130 on the 24th so I am not going to be able to do any spotting on Friday. I am wondering if there is going to be anyone interested in getting together in the afternoons or mornings on the 21-23rd of Oct to do some spotting or just hang out. I may also plan on going to LGB to get some B6 equipment. If anyone is interested please email me thru my profile.

Happy Spotting

The subject of LAX spotting reminds me of a question I have been meaning to ask: Is the observation deck above the restaurant under the arches theme structure at LAX open?

Yes, unfortunately the observation deck at the top of the Encounter Restaurant, which provided excellent panoramic views of LAX, has been closed due to "security reasons."

I don't think the spotters deck is open yet but I have had good luck at In and Out burger as well as the limo lot. If anyone can meet up and we hit the good spots it would be great. If anyone is interested I will look at my email from now until then and I will send out my cell phone number to those interested in meeting up.

The deck isn't expected to open anytime soon...but if you get a rental...you can cover all the spots around the airport!

I am not going to get a rental trying to be real cheap compared to my other trips out there. I can walk to In and Out and the limo lot without any problems but over on the hill is a little bit out of walking distance.

I haven't been spotting or photographing
for over ten years, but the runway 25's at LAX,
had a cargo area where you could go
at the fences, that put you on top
of the aircraft.During the weekends,
there were lots of photographers. Take a
look at the PSA photo's in this section
or dail in to catchoursmile@aol.com.
But I would think the area is closed in
todays world. There were great places at all
SoCal airports to take photo's, now most likley
all closed. Too bad.

OK it is looking rite now like it will only be myself or if people want to make it out after work feel free. I hope to meet some of the LA-LGB area spotters. I am hoping to make it to LGB on one of my days to get some shots there as well.

Sean, You probably won't be the only spotting at LAX. Remember, if it's a weekend and a really nice day, there will be other spotters at In N Out, TheParkingSpot, Imperial Hill, or Lincoln Br.

I was lucky to catch a few spotters when I went to LAX and met several guys who spots there quite frequently.

Kevin

PS. These guys are not on airliners.net. If you want to contact them, you have to go to jetphotos.net.

I might be in LAX on 24, 25, and 26. Willy probably fly in on the evening of the 23rd. So if anyone else is going to be there for the weekend, I'm game.

What is the status of the construction on Imperial Hill? Has it been completed, and what does it look like now?

Thanks,
Josh

I've flown on 9V-SPK.

Plans are still in place for a meetup if there is anyone willing to meet during my time at LAX. Or if there is anyone who is near LGB I will be happy to meet there as well. I hope to meet some people otherwise I may just fly to LHR and do some more photos there.

The construction on the hill may be finished by then...it seems quite a bit of progress has been made. You can still shoot from there with construction going on...just go around the fence and have at it. Many people do. Besides..if it's not finished....they don't work on teh weekends anyway.

The last time I was in LA and had a rental, I remember coming to a stop before turning left from Sepulveda northwest onto Lincoln just above the airport (see below). There was a grassy strip-type traffic island to the left of Sepulveda Boulevard and two guys with binoculars and cameras were lying down on the island photographing planes flying overhead. When the light turned green, I made my turn, but I wonder if security ever shooed them away?

I've also sat in the Burger King at 96th Street facing east and viewed planes flying over the Malaysian Airlines billboard across the street while munching a burger.  Smile

Worldperks, I'm certain that spot is okay..in fact, two choice spots are in this photo. If you follow the word 'office' in [Airport Office Center] on the old Western Airlines building...there's a red truck coming towards you..next to it (on the left) is the Inn & Out Burger park. Always loaded with spotters and fotogs. The 2nd spot, further to the left, behind the shrubs and wall is a Super Shuttle van or two..this lot is open to the public but it's crowded with limo drivers and their cars...it's right at the threshold of 24L and 24R. However, if you lack discretion...the cops will chase you from this area.

You're absolutely right. The grassy plot left of the red truck is where I've seen spotters. Otherwise, wouldn't you know it? I've been eating at the wrong burger joint.  Laugh out loud

LOL..not only that..Inn & Out is fresh burgers, bigger and a heck off a lot cheaper! And...closer to the action! And no security hassles here.

Best of luck on future visits!

I would love to join you that weekend, but I'll be busy with other things. There is a Starbucks on Sepulveda that does provide some great views of planes landing, and it has some nice outdoor tables for viewing.

BN747, you joking about no security hassles. When I plus three other spotters were at the Inn & Out in the beginning of the month, it took 4 hours, six patrol cars and a visit to the LAPD at LAX to make sure I and my friends weren't terrorists. Does this mean we were the first and thus very unlucky?

BTW the burgers are indeed excelllent as are fries

So, doesn't In & Out get fed up with you guys there all day? Or do you just keep buying burgers?

I'm interested because I want to get out to CA next year to try and repeat the tour I took out there in 1978 (flares and WIDE shirt collars!)  Smile

Not at all LJ, I don't know when that was...but it seems the cops will approach ask a few questions and leave..in the 'worst' case scenario! For the most part, they usually just look and continue on their way. Same for the parking garages..esp. the big one near Bradley (intl) terminal...they just bike up ask a few questions and leave you to your spotting. If there's an EL AL jet at the gates...they may hang around til it's gone.

BN747, it was September 6th and we must have been extremely unlucky. According to the detective of the Anti-Terrorist Division he never heard of spotters thus had to explain why we travelled around the world just to see aircraft.

BTW According to the detective spotting is allowed at the Inn & Out (we received his card with his mobile which we could call in case the police showed up) thus any policeofficer who says it's illegal doesn't speak the truth.

So, doesn't In & Out get fed up with you guys there all day? Or do you just keep buying burgers?

We bought indeed all our food and drinks from the Inn & Out (thus I reckon they didn't call). However, you don't have to stand on Inn & Out property (there's a small park in front).

Honestly..I think this detective, looked over at his partner..and said..'I'm bored, let's go have some fun with these guys'...and once they saw you were foreigners..Yep..you guys made their day!

What am I saying? Yes, we have cops here who 'get off' on making people sweat bullets...they know how to size up a situation perfectly. The regular guys around the airport never encounter such crap. It's a shame that cops in europe have a better udnerstanding of these things than the cops here...it doesn't take much brain power to realize that people are intrigued by machinery! People pay through the nose in this country to go watch cars drive around in circles (NASCAR). Why should people be less thrilled about machines that are a 1000 times bigger and defies gravity and blows your ear drums out? The cops here need to take it to the next level...end of story!
