MH at one point was being approached by Embraer for ERJ prospects. Nonetheless that was some time ago and MH wasn't in any position to purchase new planes therefore made no decision on it, neither were they specially interested.

Most recent fleet planning news on the passenger fleet side was that Boeing's marketing team came to Kuala Lumpur to meet the Penerbangan Malaysia Berhad board and that of MAS'. Discussion included B7E7 and possible future fleet renewal plan. Content of other discussions invovled were not being revealed to others within the airline.

Therefore there is no decision to renew the F50 fleet at the moment. Our airline is being very conservative on spendings to keep itself in the black.

We are spending a lot on refurbishment of fleet (B734s and upcoming long haul fleet reconfig / retrofit with upgraded product), soon to be launched online booking, upgrading of reservation system and upgrading of IT infrastrucutre systemwide at all stations across the MH offices worldwide to cope with the new system (A few contracts signed with Jeppensen, Abacus and IBM).

Fleet modernisation may not be in the distant future.

Some point I would like to add.

Well I don’t know, but few months ago, the Malaysian PM visited Brazil and followed by Brazilian President visit to Malaysia.

Both Mr. Lula and Dr. M signed a memorandum of understanding or bilateral agreement. It covers aerospace (commercial, defence and space), defence, trade and tourism. Your PM also visited Embraer plant when he was there.

So, there were possibilities MH might go for ERJ series. Based on: -
German Chancellor Schroeder visited MY: - High Speed Railway project JV with Malaysian company
Malaysian PM visited FR: - Airbus deals/landing rights/Airbus wings composites etc with CTRM Sdn. Bhd/
Russian President Putin visited MY: - 18 Su-MKM/space exploration with Russian
And the list goes on.

That’s my speculation. When? I don’t know. Maybe after the whole restructuring programme has completed.

MH may not really want that 100% capacity increase from a F50 to F100. We have to remember that their East Malaysia operations are not that much of a cash cow, just for the national service. The domestic service are now operated for the government at a fixed cost for each seat, profit or loss goes to the government. But that is another story. I am sure MH does not need the capacity of the F100, and not the F70 either.

Before MH bought the F50, they had a great concern over the short field performance. Although F50 is not a certified STOL, it does not require great length of runway for take off in the rural areas of East Malaysia where airports are not very well equipped. They chose the F50 over the BAe 146-200. Of course they have the Twin Otter for the even more rural services and lands the twin otter on some 2000ft runway or less I heard, or some are just normal roads.

MH needs a plane that is good at short field to replace the F50. Maybe the F70 but I doubt it. I would think MH would be interested in new builts anyways, when they can afford it. The F70/F100 are no longer produced and sourcing for parts is not all that easy. (although there are currently a lot of F100 of ex-US Air and soon the AA examples).

I'd think another prop would be the best bet. Given prop's versatility and flexibility on not so well equipped runways and airports. Jets often need more runway length and more ground equipment support. Maybe the ATR42 or ATR72? Or perhaps the Dash 8 Q series. ERJ145s sound good but I don't think they can give the seat mile cost the F50 is giving MH now. I believe only another prop can give that.
