What do you guys think about a 777 being modified with a new wing
with 4 engines. Just as the Airbus company has the 330 and the 340
which are pretty similar in the basic design except for the wing. This,
I think, would also make boeing more competitive with the 330/340
and will also offer a much better trans-pacific aircraft - well may be ...
any thoughts are comments?

I've flown on 9V-SPK.

I think that that would help the 777, but I highly doubt that that would happen because Boeing seems to like 2 huge engines of 4 smaller ones.

But, I Airbus is taking away to much of the market from Boeing the future, it is possible.

That is not true, the wings of the A330 and A340 are practically identical. The only difference is the number of engines...

Airbus knew that they wanted to make the A330 and A340 together, and the designs were standardized. Neither planes are really perfect, but are very economical when considered as a pair. The 777 was purpose-designed to be a 2-engined aircraft, so unless Boeing is being really sneaky, I don't think the design can be economically modified into a 4-engined plane.

I guess a four-engine 767 would do it. That would be nice. It would be a great competitor to the new Airbus A340-500/600. Boeing could call that one the 787. The 787 would have the exact same cockpit windshield, fuselage width and cabin layout than the 767 but the wings would ge larger because they would each have to hold 2 engines and carry more fuel to meet the design range. The market for that aircraft would be the Pacific Rim.
I guess one other think engineers will add is a center landing gear in the middle of the fuselage, just between the two main landing gears, like on the DC-10-30/MD-11 and Airbus A340. The advantage that it would have over the 777 on oceanic flights is that no ETOPS certification would apply.
If Boeing starts thinking of it now, it could come out of the Everett plant in the mid 2000's and enter first airline service in or 2007 or 2008.
The other one that Boeing should start thinking of is the 767-500, to replace the 200 which is today (1998) a decade and a half old. Like I explained in other posts, the 767-500 would have the same fuselage as the 200 but wings and fuel capacity of the 400. That would be a good airplane for American.

If boeing does this, I think they will say to the whole world that there 777 is no good on Trans pacific flights, even though now there saying that its the airlines choice for such routes. So doing that will totally kill the 777's image that ETOPS is very important or something like that. If they do that ok airbus will get competition, however I think there needs to be a lot of work to be done if they are going to do that cause the aircraft was designed as a twin not a 4 engined aircraft.
