Yes, they do have a hub of sorts at MIA. Rather than operating direct flights to Central America from MAD, they feed them through MIA. Only direct from MAD is MEX. SJO, CUN, PTY, etc. all operate through MIA with the 319s.

Is that was using on the an international transit from connecting of MAD to MIA and direct to Central America is MEX, CUN, SJO, PTY and etc. You may think about of those international flight and the baggage will be automated to their final destination cities.

As I understand it, this is a 5th freedom operation.
Though, I am not sure if John Doe American cicitzen can purchase seats on the Iberia flights from MIA to destinations other than MAD or points in Europe and beyond - that way?
Further, does anyone know the load factors on these flights?
I can't imagine feeding MIA with 2 IB flights, and 1 AA 763 flight (spread through the day) can populate the 4-9 destinations IB uses with 319 from MIA??
It is cool to have, I like seeing the IB a/c in MIA.

yeah it's kind of interresting to see a middle haul european airplane flying into the US and south America...would be like a NW A320 flying in Amsterdam

Wlhat will happen to the Iberia mini-hub in Miami if the US immigration/Congress does not back down on requiring US visas for transit passengers? In the past, a visa wasn't required if a passenager was transiting through a US airport to a foreign destination. However, the proposal is to require all passengers landing on US soil to get a visa. The airlines are objecting.

Many of the A319's that belong to Iberia fly to Central America and Mexico at this time. This is very new. Withing the last 6 months or so they started to fly from MIA to SAP, MGA and other central American cities.

Its not very new. Its been that way for a while, and was done with MD aircraft before the A319s arrived.
Iberia enjoys full 5th freedoms - meaning they can pick up and drop off all the American passengers they want.

This is not new at all. It has been going on since the early 1990s. 1991 I think. Iberia does not have full 5th freedom however. They serve seven destinations, and they have 5th freedom to five of them. San Salvador and Cancun passengers must originate outside of the United States. They had 5th freedom on MIA-CUN until late August.

I flew them once about 5 years ago, PTY - MIA , when they still used DC-9´s , back then the load factors where almost always 100%, they still are although iberia has had heavy loss of traffic due to the new stupid US immigration laws, the new regulation is completly ridiculus, the iberia waiting room is imposible to leave whitout a US visa

AF used to do this in MIA way back when.
Lamyl_hhlco:
If KLM was not in AMS, you would see that type of a/c there. NW has A320 and B757 series aircraft with scheduled service in Tokyo to places like:
NRT-TPE (B757) Taipei
NRT-PUS (A320 going to 757 now) Busan Korea
NRT-GUM (A320) Guam
That's cool I must say for a US carrier to put in routes originating in another country.
I hope IB doesn't have to push out there mini-hub in MIA due to US security / twov / or whatever rules we may have for intl cnxn pax.

Air France still does. Eight times weekly island hopper service between Miami and Port-Au-Prince, Pointe Pitre, Fort de France, and Cayenne. Where exactly the flight goes depends on the day, but it leaves MIA for PAP every morning at around 830am and gets in every night at around 830PM (on one day, I believe Saturday, there are two island hopper services that operate within about .5 hours of each other). It operates with either an Air France A320 or an Air France Regional ERJ-145 (owned by Air Caribes but in full AF colours) depending on the day. However, it is not a feeder service for CDG flights. It is provided as the easiest way for residents of French and former French territories to get to the US easily.

Thanks! Did not know that, but that is cool. I was only aware of the former 727 and 737 services (CDG connections) from then.
Next time I am down, there will have to spot one out.

I have a question. How does Iberia get their A319s across the Atlantic Ocean. Surely we are not talking about direct flights from Spain to Miami. According to what I've read, the A319 is not capable of that kind of range. Does anyone know if the A319s stop at Iceland, Bermuda, or someplace in between? Please answer me, if you have information. Another thing I can connect to Lamyl_hhlco's comment.

They do the northern Atlantic hop. Stopping in like Ireland, Iceland, Gander NewFoundland, and other North American spots to make it down to South Florida.
Also, going empty (just a flight crew and maybe a person or two extra for support) extends the range.

An empty A319 probably has no trouble making the flight... maybe just one stop.

I wish I could be a dictionary of freedoms - I'm not. But 5th Freedoms give a carrier the right to originate and terminate a flight in a foreign country, with all rights to passengers and cargo.
For example - a Japanese gentleman can fly NRT-GUM-NRT on Northwest, without originating from a NW flight from the US, or heading to the US from GUM.

For the flight to MIA from spain ,i beleive that the A319 could have been equiped with sup fuel tanks as we know that the plane flies almost empty so it could be possible. Just to notice that the A319 can fly with a range of up to 3,700 nm/6,800 km.

NW already does this...except not across the Atlantic, but across the Pacific in Tokyo...they have a small fleet of A320s based there for destinations too small to be served by 747s...except 757s are going there soon to replace the buses
