I was glad to read this at the skyteam website:

SkyTeam Welcomes KLM Application for Membership

PARIS, Sept. 30, 2003 - The Governing Board of SkyTeam today welcomed KLM's decision to apply for SkyTeam membership, in the scope of a project announced by Air France and KLM to create a new, leading European airline group, through a share exchange between both airlines.

"With the addition of KLM, customers will enjoy unparalleled access to the world's most favorite and heavily traveled routes," said Jean-Cyril Spinetta, chairman and CEO of Air France, on behalf of the Governing Board. "KLM's Schiphol will be an integral part of SkyTeam's extensive hub strategy, adding a new powerful European hub to a network that already includes Atlanta, Mexico City, Milan, Paris-CDG, Prague, Rome and Seoul. This will allow us to offer our customers a wider range of convenient connections and a larger choice of destinations."

The SkyTeam alliance network will provide passengers with the opportunity to receive benefits from their preferred airline while traveling on any of the SkyTeam carriers. The enlarged alliance will offer a broad network for customers to connect via a multi-hub system to hundreds of cities around the world, will increase ease of ticketing, check-in and baggage handling, will allow customers to receive frequent flyer benefits on all carriers, and will make travel on any of the airlines a seamless experience.

No official date has been set for KLM to officially join SkyTeam. However, the alliance anticipates customers to start receiving benefits linked to the arrival of this new member airline within the next six to nine months.

SkyTeam is the global airline alliance partnering Aeroméxico, Air France, Alitalia, CSA Czech Airlines, Delta Air Lines and Korean Air. Through one of the world's most extensive hub networks, SkyTeam offers its 212 million annual passengers a worldwide system of approximately 7,700 daily flights covering all major destinations. In 2002, Global Finance magazine named SkyTeam the best airline in their list of the "Best Global Companies."

It's good to hear that KLM is joining Skyteam. This should greatly strength Skysteam as an alliance, especially when it comes to Europe.

I'm looking forward to MEA joining Skyteam in 2 years. This will make them the first alliance to have a Middle Eastern airline if Gulf Air and Emirates don't join before.

Airplanetire,

Well the plan is in two years MEA will join Skyteam. That's the plan.

They launched a MASSIVE (and I mean massive) restructuring program in 1998 and have just completed it.

They went from an over-staffed, poorly-managed airline losing millions serving unprofitable routes using old 707s to a modern, world-class carrier operating A321s and A330s making a profit. They did that in 5 years.

So the restructuring is complete and if all goes as plan, in two years MEA will join Skyteam.

Beirut was picked as Skyteam's future hub in the Middle East also.

Let me also remind you that MEA and Air France formed a strong partnership back in 1998 in which together, the two airlines operate 3 daily flights between Paris and Beirut. They also share frequent fliers.

MEA gets connections from Air France through Paris to other destinations in Europe, North, and South America. And MEA provides connections for Air France to Jeddah, Kuwait City, Abu Dhabi, and Dubai.

Regards

Support Airliners.net - become a First Class Member!

That will be a compelling alliance: Aeroflot (maybe), Aeroméxico, Air France, Alitalia, CSA, Continental, Delta, KLM, Korean Air, MEA, Northwest.

If that happened, anyone know Skyteam's "share" in terms of RPMs in the US/Europe/Asia?

Wow that was childish.

I wouldn't be super excited about having CSA or Alitalia in my alliance, and Korean just recently got to start code sharing again.

Skyteam's presence in Asia is pathetic.

You can keep the list going... but there's still far more airlines in *, and they're all of higher quality.

Well, thats why Northwest, and also possibly Malaysia will be joining.....and even Continental Micronesia service from Guam would tremendously help SkyTeam's Asia presence.

NORTHWEST

Last I checked they weren't a member. Haven't even applied yet; even though it's widely believed, if not definitely known, that they would like to become members, nothing is certain until it happens. Besides, you don't get many benefits out of an airline that's going to be a member until they actually are.

Remember when LOT was supposed to join Star? And now they're just finally getting around to it.

United 717 heavy, you're facing the wrong way. Any chance you can powerback to get off of my deice pad?

Let us stop the "Skyteam sucks" attitude.

Skyteam is a much smaller fish than Star Alliance and One World. So they can't be compared.

I wouldn't be super excited about having CSA or Alitalia in my alliance

Alitalia is a fine airline, what's the problem here? CSA is not bad either. Just because they are an Eastern European airline, that doesn't make them bad. They certainly aren't up there like the major carriers, but they are a pretty good airline.

Also don't tell me Star Alliance doesn't have a small less popular European airline. Star has Spanair (which isn't a bad carrier, just no big like Lufthansa), and soon Star will have LOT which from what I have heard is a worse carrier than CSA.

So please, enough with the Star Alliance vs. One World vs. Skyteam attitude. The three are great alliances and one happens to be small compared to the rest and shouldn't be put down because it's smaller.

I agree that Skyteam's Asia operations need to be expanded. Hopefully they will in the future.

MEA will probably in the future launch routes to Asia sometime after they join Skyteam, so that should provide a slight boost.

Regards

I never thought Skyteam sucked but it is true that even at this moment with KL in it, Skyteam can still hardly compare with OW and * on worldwide presence.

Maybe in the future when KL/CO/NW, MH, MEA, A Chinese carrier, an Indian carrier (Jet?) and both a stronger South American partner and a South African all form a strong Skyteam then it would kick some of Star's butt. But now, no no... A bit far .
