If QF is given the rights to fly HKG-LHR, CX want to fly SYD-LAX!! HKG-LHR is something QF has dearly wanted for years. It will be interesting to see what they want more: HKG-LHR or continued protectionism on SYD-LAX.

It is interesting that Qantas and Cathay Pacific are both in the same alliance (oneworld) yet are true competitors.
SYD-HKG-LHR rights would reduce the distance to London.
With Cathay now operating Hong Kong - Rome for Qantas surley some cooperation is in order. In order to codeshare the airlines need the respective rights, but surely CX can put passengers on QF flights to LA, and vice versa for London flights.
Time will tell, I guess it isn't as big a threat as Singapore Airlines, but HKG-LHR rights would reduce flying times to London
