Hey all. I sometimes will just scury around in DL's timetables. They absolutely never cease to shock the you know what out of me! I swear, they use 767s as much as any other airline uses 757s if not more, and they use just as much 757s as they do 767s! I would be supprised if Combined seat totals for all the schedules flights on DL were more than twice of that at UA! So, does Delta keep these routes full? Or are they a master at flying empty space! I see interesting routes that support several wide bodys a day, and wonder, HOW IN THE HELL DO THEY DO THAT!

Delta does have the largest fleet of 767's in the world (about 120) and about an equal number of 757's. Delta's load factor numbers are comparable to other airlines so no they aren't flying empty space. For one thing, Delta's route system is built much more around low cost competition and Florida leisure markets than other airlines. Delta has the highest percentage of revenue from domestic services than any of the big 5 airlines (not sure about US) and they also have the largest average hull size for their domestic flights. In order for a network carrier to make money competing against low cost carriers, they have to carry lots of volume. Delta's strategy more than any network carrier is mass transportation as evidenced by the fact that Delta has carried more passengers than any other airline in the world for a number of years (the title is somewhat up in the air due to industry restructuring and Southwest growth).

Until AA bought TW, DL carried more passengers every year than any other airline.

If I remember correctly, in 2000 they carried 120,000,000 passengers.
On their Jacksonville, Florida route, they use B-767-300's (252 seats) almost every hour.

DL is one of the few majors that have major hubs (ATL, CVG, SLC, DFW, and JFK for Intl traffic) and then also maintain point to point service for their larger markets.

For JAX we have direct service on DL to:
ATL
CVG
DFW
LGA
JFK
DCA

... Which works out well for me (since I work for BA). I can just hop on one of their jets to JFK and get on one of my own planes to LHR with minimal fuss and muss or if I want to go into NYC or WAS.

Actually, I believe DL is #1 in terms of % of flights operated by regional jets... most of its widebody flying is based ex-ATL, where it operates an enormus SuperHub.

All the 767s is one of the main reasons I fly DL, but it also never stops amazing me that I might fly the same route on DL 767 or 57 and have no seats empty than fly same routes on the same days of the week on a UAL 320 or 319 and have a handful of seats empty. This has happend serveral times. GO DELTA!

Huh? I can't think of any routes (excluding repositioning flights / flights to DL hubs) in which DL operates a 767/757 and UA 319/A320 (they compete on very few routes). I do know that UA flies B762/B763 LAX-SFO and DL's now flying B757/B763 on it...

I have noticed the same thing about DL. They sure don't mind putting the heavy iron in the air, do they? Go, Delta, go!

Makes me think they really liked having those 747's back in the 70's.

Does it escape people that DL operates MORE flights and the largest % of flights with regional jets than any other carrier?

DL is the only network carrier flying TUL-OKC -- it's a route left over from Western and is part of a flight stretching from ATL to DFW/SLC (it rotates).

One of the reasons I fly Delta a lot within the United States is their use of bigger aircraft and their own metal most of the times. If t is not the roomy 757 or the wide body 767, it is a comfortable 738, or for that matter the 777 (to MCO). Their loads seem to be pretty good...everytime I fly they are almost always full. I have never had problems flying through their superhub ATL. Way to go Delta!

cheers

Wow, some of you people fly a different DL than I do. I fly a DL that operates more than half its flights with the CRJ -- including routes like DFW-ONT (a very, very long flight in a regional jet).

More kudos to you all--I hope to find this DL that operates nothing but B738, B757, B767 and B777!

IndustrialPate...maybe you're right. Maybe DL does operate the most flights on a RJ, and everyone here knows the probability that you are right and I am wrong is high.

What I would be curious to know is what percentage of their total flights are RJs. At least they fly their big metal in addition to the RJs as opposed to, say Continental, which probably operates more RJ flights as a percentage of their total flights.

maybe you can shed some more light...

cheers

speaking of DL, what destinations are served by 767-400 from LGA?

The last time I checked, DL was #1 in both total # of flights and percentage. Both DL and CO are in the low 50%, I'm not sure of the exact number -- I do know that DL was head of CO by a few points not too long ago.

I believe we get about three DL 752's a day in CMH, going to ATL and CVG. I've flown both routes a couple of times on the aircraft and they were all full.

On 9/28 I was on DL162 SEA-ATL which was operated by a 764 (at the time) and there were maybe 4 empty seats on the entire plane.

Flight 1264 DFW-ATL (mentioned above) was also flown with a 764 at one point in time. I was on that flight last year and I'd say it was about 30-40% full. Loooots of space.

I sure wish we would see some of the large aircraft here in DTW. All we get are MD-80's and CRJ's. Quite Boring. I do see that we are going to get one 757 to ATL in the winter. WOW!

DL does good at the routes they have the 757 and 767 a/c on. They also operate the largest fleet of regional jets they say on the phone while you are on hold. Depending on where you are and where you are going get ready for a RJ or a 777! It just depends.

I think they do a good job of placing the right sized a/c on the right routes.

I start to think a B777 ATL-MCO is overkill (as that could me spread w/ frequencies) and the CR7 that IndusPe mentions DFW-ONT is overkill the other direction. But, we can't have a 757 and 767 for every flight.

They do good at 'sizing' - matched with frequency and demand IMHO. Which is one of the reasons they are my airline of choice.

One example of a route where DL flies (or flew, at least) 767s against UA 319/320/737/757 is DEN-SLC. I've flown quite a number of times on DL 767s for that short hop. Some have been kinda empty, some have been packed to the gills.

ATL MCO did have around 13 widebody flights pre 911, with all of the a/c's being 757 or larger. Now it's down to 11, and 1 of those is a stinkin CRJ! That's just a drop in the bucket on such a high density market...I've seen some of those 777 flights with -45 in the back....and that's ALL DAY. They need to restore more widebodys in there..it's still a huge market.

DeltaGuy Dude: Cool it, I can't believe you are complaining about the ATL-MCO DL service. And the CRJ flight was really just a clean-up, did you ever even fly it? Further, the CRJ and MD-80 flights have been upgraded to 767 or better! You are talking Jell-O! Try living in a small market!

BTW - In the future schedules, like tomorrow, here is the flight schedule:

Delta 329 6:35am Atlanta (ATL) 7:53am Orlando (MCO) Boeing 767-300 0
Delta 1129 8:46am Atlanta (ATL) 10:12am Orlando (MCO) Boeing 767-300 0
Delta 1451 10:19am Atlanta (ATL) 11:45am Orlando (MCO) Boeing 767-400 0
Delta 63 11:35am Atlanta (ATL) 12:56pm Orlando (MCO) Boeing 777-200 0
Delta 2150 1:05pm Atlanta (ATL) 2:26pm Orlando (MCO) Boeing 767-300 0
Delta 909 2:35pm Atlanta (ATL) 4:05pm Orlando (MCO) Boeing 767-400 0
Delta 1421 4:15pm Atlanta (ATL) 5:43pm Orlando (MCO) Boeing 767-400 0
Delta 1228 5:20pm Atlanta (ATL) 6:48pm Orlando (MCO) Boeing 767-300 0
Delta 1039 7:00pm Atlanta (ATL) 8:26pm Orlando (MCO) Boeing 767-300 0
Delta 1567 8:35pm Atlanta (ATL) 10:01pm Orlando (MCO) Boeing 767-400 0
Delta 1789 10:05pm Atlanta (ATL) 11:28pm Orlando (MCO) Boeing 767-400 0
Delta 1279 11:30pm Atlanta (ATL) 12:46am (next day) Orlando (MCO) Boeing 767-300 0
