Flight #'s, Why The Changes?

In March of this year, for example, I flew AA flight 460, SAN-ORD. It then continued on to YYZ, but now if you check their schedule, flight 460 goes from XNA-ORD-YYZ. Ive noticed other airlines change their flight #'s as well. Why is this? WHat is the logic behind changing the numbers of the flights?
