Aer Lingus Equipment BWI-DUB

My wife and I are traveling to Ireland from BWI-DUB (via SNN) in February. I know that the scheduled equipment is an A330-200, but does anyone here know about IFE, meal service, etc. I have visited Aer Lingus' web site but it isn't much help - fleet info is just a press release about their recent purchase of 17 new A320s.

Thanks for any help anyone here can give.

Aer Lingus flies only the A330 on North Atlantic routes. The BWI/JFK/BOS and ORD to DUB/SNN routes are operated with the A330-300. The LAX-DUB route is flown with a longer range A330-200.

No PTV's, nice cabins, average food, competent, if aloof staff.

Not a great airline but not a bad one at all.

Are their A 332s restricted with payload regulations for the DUB-LAX-DUB route? As its a pretty long 11-12 hr nonstop flight for an A 332 though I know this same aircraft flies ICN-ZRH nonstop etc.

I took EI on a DUB-SNN-DUB flight this year, to try their A330 out.
My flight was two times operated with EI-DAA, the only A332 in the fleet with PVT's.

Seats are very comfortable, good seat pitch, you will get free headsets, and if you are lucky you will have PVT's.

Note that my DUB-SNN flight continued to BWI and my SNN-DUB flight came from BWI.

Go to the website and put in your traveling dates. You will be given the flight number which I assume will be EI118. If you click on the number you will be given a small itinery stating terminal information and aircraft type etc. If its an A330-200 there's a good chance of getting PTV's.

Here's one good indication of telling whether you'll be on DAA. This usually works. But again, no guarantees - especially since February is a long way off. As DAA is the preferred equipment for LAX service you'll be very lucky to get this bird. Go to www.seatmap.com. Type in your flight dates etc. The seat map will come up with seating back to row 27 only. EI is similar to VS in their pre-allocation of seats - very strange system. Specifically look at rows 11-13 HK. If those seats aren't there - it's a pretty good chance DAA is slotted to fly that route....seats are reserved for crew rest seats (as I said generally there for LAX service). American sells their crew rests on JFK-LHR but I don't know about EI.

Maybe Sabena 690 can confirm my information....I only have it from people that have don EI144/5. I've not done it. Living/commuting from Ireland to New York for 4 years I never got on the 332. Got to do the 333 more times than I care but oh well.

Enjoy your trip to Ireland. I have a relative coming over from Dublin to Washington on 119 and 118 this week and I'll let you know what she thought. I believe she is scheduled to fly on DAA so I'll let you know too if my info is accurate.

Unfortunately, my cousin had the privilege of flying out the day Aer Lingus cabin crew went on strike. Despite that the airline chartered a bunch of jets from various airlines and she was eventually rerouted to DUB-SNN on Air Plus Comet A310, SNN-JFK on Corsair 747, and JFK-DCA on AA Eagle. Needless to say, she didn't have the chance to get on the 332....but she is "scheduled" to fly out Thursday on it and I will let you know if my suspicions on the configuration are correct....I think she will be on EI-DAA...but not certain.

All that I can say is wow about your cousin's flight. DUB-SNN-JFK-DCA is a bit of a detour from the original flight plan isn't it? Oh well, I guess the point is that she still got here. I hope that EI cabin crew has resolved matters by Thursday and she gets to fly on EI-DAA.

EI added BWI as a U.S. destination several years back, after they added EWR to their existing destinations of BOS and JFK. We wondered why EWR got added to JFK, but they made money there, so they must have had their reasons for what I would perceive as duplication...

BWI was chosen over IAD because the state of Maryland succesffuly pitched BWI's less-crowded airport over IAD. I lived in Maryland at the time and the courting done by Maryland on behalf of BWI was intense, whereas IAD didn't really put in all that great an effort. BWI is a perfect airport for EI - less competition and more appreciation, also proximity to two cities, whereas IAD is quite a hike for Baltimore residents.

As for EI's flight attendants being "aloof," I have always found them to be vivacious, charming and very hospitable, if efficient and professional. Maybe ContinentalEWR prefers the antics of WN to the professionalism and courtesy of EI and other "real" (read: European) airlines. Most Europeans find WN's hijinx to be unprofessional, very amateurish and bordering on the offensive, much like they find George W. Bush.
