The 7E7 Design

I've heard many great things about the 7E7, for example that it is supposed to fill both the B757/767 markets. One question, the 7E7 is going to be humongous, right? After all, an earlier discussion in this forum mentioned that Boeing built it in response to the A380. Has Boeing even put it on a blueprint/computer yet? I haven't found one speck of info pertaining to the 7E7's design, range capabilities, size, etc, except that it is to compete with A380. Also, when would we expect to see the first 7E7 rolled off the production line, supposing it is ordered soon?

You are woefully misinformed. The 7E7 is in NO way designed to compete with the A380. Although there will be derivatives later, the original 7E7 is designed to hold about 200-250 passengers with a range of about 7,000, with a longer-range version to come later. (I could be wrong on the range.)

The reason that there is little data out there is because the plane hasn't been launched yet. Boeing is still deciding whether to go ahead with the project or not. They do have an idea about what the airplane will be able to do.

Here's the technical data (from boeing.com) they have so far:

  • Seating:
    200 passengers in three-class configuration
    300+ in single-class configuration
  • Range:
    6,600 nautical miles (12,200 km)
  • Configuration:
    Twin aisle
  • Cross Section:
    226 inches (574 centimeters)
  • Wing Span:
    186 feet (57 meters)
  • Length:
    182 feet (56 meters)
  • Cruise Speed:
    Mach 0.85
  • Cargo Capacity After Passenger Bags:
    5 pallets + 5 LD3s
  • Maximum Takeoff Weight:
    408,800 lbs (185,400 kg)
  • Program Milestones:
    Authority to offer: Late 2003/Early 2004
    Assembly start: 2005
    First flight: 2007
    Certification/Entry into service: 2008


I think there are two things that could happen. One, Boeing launches the plane within the next year. Or two, Boeing pulls out of the commercial airplane building business. They've had too many concept plane (like the 747X and Sonic Cruiser) that they've gotta build a new plane or no one will take them seriously in the future.

I was thinking the same damn thing myself. Boeing doesn't have a choice with this one. Launch this airplane, or the current line are the last airliners Boeing will build.

I can tell you, as a Boeing employee, I am 99.9% sure that the 7E7 will not only launch, but be very successful. I worked in Information Systems, specifically working with the Finance department. And without going into any specifics, I can tell you that Boeing allocated a substantial amount of their IS budget next year for 7E7 projects.

I seriously doubt that Boeing is going to balk on this one. The 7E7 is almost sure to go forward; if not; Boeing Commerical Airplanes is in serious trouble. Essentially, Boeing is "betting the company" on the future of the 7E7.
