LH was using an A340-200 on the FRA - PHX - FRA route until the -200's were no longer with them. Why did they then switch to the B763ER's? Is there little premium traffic on this route? I would have thought using the A330 or even the A340-300 would have been a wise choice? Is the B763 still used to ATL or is that back to a A343?

British Airways really dominates the high-fare European traffic from PHX, getting an added bonus from the America West codeshare. I imagine Lufthansa really just picks up the scraps--there is probably a good amount of business traffic between PHX and Germany, but I think most of the passengers on this flight are going to be German tourists. Better to use the A330s/A340s for more business-oriented markets like DTW/ORD/LAX/SFO, I guess.

Actually, my sister is on that flight (FRA-PHX) as I type this. I assure you that she is not a German tourist.
She is a PHX tourist who took the flight enroute to Italy.
Not sure if it was "high fare" but I doubt it.
I guess my baby sister is in the category of "scraps" then...

This week -- that route was operated by Condor for Lufthansa -- hence the 767. When the 2-per-week November nonstop service starts again next week, it will be serviced by the Lufthansa A340.
Hope that helps!

...I´m a flight attendant working these LH/DE 767 flights.
Beginning Oct. 26 our 767 will fly a daily service MUC-MIA-MUC.
ATL is back to A340 operation since august
PHX and PHL will both go back to A340 operation as soon as the MIA operation starts.
Hope this helps!
By the way I really don´t know why everybody complained about these two 767 a/c???!!! I never heard any complains from people who flew them with Lauda???!!! Everybody calls Lauda a premium carrier?
Our 767´s have definetly a way better economy section, than any LH 340 or 744!!!
And even some people might think that the A340 is the better plane (I definetly don´t agree), we are the better cabin crew though!!!
I definetly miss coming to ATL, will also miss PHX and PHL!

the lease of these two Lauda 763s will probably end early next year.
the reason why LH doesn´t operate A343s to PHX on the one hand is the fact that there´s almost no First Class demand so they don´t need the A343s for this leg, and on the other hand they don´t operate their leased A332s to PHX because on this long flight, LH crews must be granted a certain rest time. however, the ex SR- and SN A332s are not compatible with the moveable crew rest containers that LH owns, so they only send the Condor-piloted 763s there (different contracts, no required crew rest).
hope that answers some questions
If only pure sweetness was offered, why's this bitter taste left in my mouth.

I agree with you Setjet that B767 is below LH standards... B767 would be good aircraft for long haul charter work or for transcontinental US flights, but absolutely not the right choice for FRA-PHX route. I wonder why LH ever took 767s even they are on short term lease.
The most disturbing things on board of B767 are NOISE and very outdated lavatories (like all Boeing's aircrafts, EXCEPT B777). Especially on 8hrs+ flights noise is really annoying! I have flown many times with B747, B767, B777, A330, A340, DC-10, MD-11 and all those are quieter than B767... Just my thoughts.

you guys should not forget, the 767 is still the queen of the Northatlantic!
There is no other plane crossing the pond more often than the Boeing 767!!!
So it´s definetly not just the right plane for charters or transcontinental US flights. Except for NW all the US majors fly the 767 frequently and in large numbers on transatlantic services, and they´re highly satisfied with it!
