Hi everyone!
Hopefully someone will be able to give me some more info on this: I have just been on SAA's website checking for flights to London in November/December and I see that there is a "strange" flight calling itself SA3223 operating the LHR-JNB route on the 14th of December.
Where does this "extra" flight come from? I'm assuming this flight is in addition to SA235 and SA229...i.e. 3 flights from Heathrow to Jo'burg on that day? Also, does anyone know if this extra flight is operating on any other days, and if there is an extra one going from Jo'burg to Heathrow on any days? The fares on this extra flight seem to be very good for this time of year.

I've just asked my mother about this(she worked for SAA). The 3 at the start of the flight number just means it's an extra flight. eg. SA201 JNB to JFK.
If there were to be an extra flight it would be SA3201 JNB to JFK. All it means is that the flight an extra to that particular route but only for international routes.

Thanks for the feedback guys.
There is certainly going to be quite a bit of traffic between SA and London this December! I mean, we could have about 12 direct flights on one day: 2 x Virgin Atlantic (1 CPT; 1 JNB), 4 x BA (2 CPT; 2 JNB), 5 x SAA (2 CPT; 3 JNB) and 1 x Nationwide (LGW-JNB).
SA006...if what you are saying is true, then the extra flight would be to Cape Town (not JNB) as SA223 is LHR-CPT. Anyone have any more information?

The aircraft operating that flight actually leaves Jo'burg very early that same morning to LHR. By the looks of things on on the Galieo system, the flight is full:
SUN 14DEC03 JOHANNESBURG/LONDON *SA
1 JNB LHR 0510 1430 SA3222 FC AC JC CC ZC YC MC BC KC HC#743 B
2 JNB LHR 2105#0625 SA 234 F9 A7 J9 C2 Z0 Y9 M9 B9 K9 H9#744 B
3 JNB LHR 2135#0655 SA 226 F9 A9 J9 C9 Z6 Y9 M9 B9 K9 H9#744 B
Must be an additional seasonal flight to cater for the extra amount pax that fly between JNB&LHR and vice versa visting friends and relatives (VFR).
