From : The Economic Times of India

Singapore Airlines plans to operate double daily flights to and from India in December and January under the limited 'open sky' policy announced for the winter schedule.

SIA, would take advantage of the policy effective between December and February and start an additional flight each from Delhi and Bangalore and an "ad hoc" weekly service from Kolkata, its General Manager ( India ) B K Ong told reporters here.

Subject to government clearances, it also plans to upgrade its Boeing 777-200 service from Chennai to Boeing 747-400 during the temporary open sky policy in the winter. Besides, its subsidiary Silk Air would operate four charter flights to Jaipur and three to Gaya during the season.

Pointing out that India moved up the rank of sending air travellers to Singapore from ninth in 2000 to seventh this year, it currently contributed almost six per cent of total arrivals into the city state this year, compared with 12 per cent of the biggest contributor Indonesia . Singapore has a liberal open sky policy with Sri Lanka , Australia and US and hope to have one with India also.

***I think that one of the main reasons to send a larger aircraft instead of increasing frequencies to MAA is because of the massive air cargo trade from MAA which would be useful in exploiting by sending a B 744 instead of a B 772!!! As far as CCU goes on an ad hoc basis, send a B 744 and not a B 772.

The article is complete bunk and typical of the Economic Times poor aviation reporting. There will be no double daily flights to India by Singapore Airlines.

Singapore Airlines will run ONE extra weekly flight to Delhi this winter on Fridays and ONE extra weekly flight to Bangalore also (tentatively) on Fridays.

The Chennai flights are already scheduled to be 747-400s on weekends but will be upgraded from 777-200s on weekdays as well.

The additional 3x weekly services to Mumbai are being launched this week and will be permanent services independant of the winter open-skies policy. SQ aims to take the second Mumbai flight to daily service during the summer schedule though pending Government approval.

Hence, for the winter schedule we will see the following services from SQ to India :

BOM - 10x weekly (7x 773, 3x 772)
DEL - 8x weekly (7x 773, 1x 772)
MAA - 7x weekly (7x 744)
CCU - 2x weekly (2x 772) + additional "ad hoc" service TBD
BLR - 4x weekly (4x 772)

Expect to see a public confirmation of that finalized schedule from SQ by mid-November, assuming no major changes in their current plans.
