Just saw a post of someone going from England to Australia and wishing to know which routing is best, via LAX or BKK.
Well, I had little choice. Next December I will be flying to Delhi MEX-LAX-HKG-DEL. Instead, I could have chosen to fly via Europe. However, the long routing was much cheaper... It is high season so tickets were U$2,900 from MEX-Europe-DEL. However, flying with CX reduces costs to U$2,200... I think U$700 is good reason to fly a little longer.
In fact, I will be flying 17.935 km o/w, 22% more than a non-stop linking those two cities... or 14% more than routing via Europe.
Anyway, I will be doing a stop-over in LAX to visit Disneyland, and a second stopover in HKG.... Not bad at all...

Try to find a cheaper airfare, back in 1995 during the high season I got an airfare of $1,300 incl. taxes MEX-DEL, the route was MEX-JFK (DL), JFK-AMM (RJ) well worth the visit to Jordan, and AMM-DEL (RJ).

I can't imagine you doing any better than you did. If MH still flew to MEX, you could have tried them, but flying with CX and doing it cheaper than with a US/ European carrier, you just can't beat that. Frankly, I'd have expected that to be more expensive and not just because it's longer.
You did really well on that - well done! And bon voyage, buenos viajes and turas shona dhuit!
