"1.) Are there spots for spotting? How do they range in quality?"
Yes. Ever heard of the Imperial Hill? Its a hill just across the street from the south runways (the 25's) Check it out. Newly paved and its on the hightest point of the hill. Great views. Also try the park on the north side of the airport near the 24s. Its right across the street from an IN n OUT burger joint. Grab a burger and see everything from Cessna Caravans to 747-400s fly right over you as youre only about 200ft. from the end of the runways. Also try the Proud Bird resturant parking lot on Aviation Blvd. east of the airport. Great views to.
"2.) How tight is security around LAX... are the cops all over the place discouraging spotting?"
Ive never come across a cop that has told me to leave. The only thing that has happened to me is that I was parked on the red zone and they told me to move my car.
All in all LAX is IMO a great place for spotters. Been going there for several years now.

Well I am a native to LAX since i live 25 minutes from there. I know spotting is great at the in and out across from LAX however, the view for the taxi action is not too good since there is a fence. I have not seen too many cops around at in and out. Well if anyone come to LAX have fun spotting it will be a blast. I miss going there since i have no time but I am dying to see some 737's, 747's and some other planes.

If you want to spend some time on the beach, the beach at the very end of the North Runways can give you some amazing views of 747's heading to Asia in the afternoon. They are so heavy that they are still very, very low when they cross the beach.
The In and Out burger joint is a great place to watch.

Hi Mark,
I'm not sure when you're planning on making the trip, but a bunch of us will be meeting up there on the weekend of November 8th and then again on Nov 28-30. If you're interested, I'd be happy to show you around to the spots. Drop me an email if you want to set something up.
