Air India To Fly 280 Hajj Flights This Year

Air India will operate 280 extra section flights between 7 gateways in India and Jeddah during the Hajj season that commences from December 24 this year.

Additionally, Saudi Arabian Airlines will operate 228 extra sections from 4 gateways in India.

Air India will operate flights with Boeing 747s and Airbus 310s while Saudi Arabian will use Boeing 747s and Boeing 777s. An estimated 72000 pilgrims from India will travel on these flights in addition to an estimated 34000 pilgrims on regularly scheduled flights.

Frequencies will be as follows in each direction :

AIR INDIA

43x Srinagar (SXR)
40x Lucknow (LKO)
19x Kozhikode (CCJ)
16x Kolkota (CCU)
9x Bangalore (BLR)
7x Chennai (MAA)
6x Nagpur (NAG)


SAUDI ARABIAN

45x Delhi (DEL)
35x Mumbai (BOM)
18x Ahmedabad (AMD)
16x Hyderabad (HYD)

Few questions to ask you which are a bit off topic:

1. PIA has said that when given clearance it will restart Indian flights with twice weekly A 310s from KHI to DEL and BOM and 1 weekly B 733 from LHE and DEL. Has Indian Airlines said anything in this matter concerning its plans on restarting KHI and LHE flights???

2. Are you in anyway related to the legend Sri Lankan cricketer DILIP MENDIS as your last names are similar?  Smile ...as you can tell Im a big cricket fan!!!

3. Do you live in YYZ or BOM? (Im in YYZ)

4. The Economic Times of India reported 2 days ago that by April-May, Air India will lease 2 more B 744s and A 313s to increase capacity and freq's to exisiting destinations and maybe be in a position to start LAX or SFO via HKG. Is this true? These aircraft are in addition to the 4 newly leased in (2 each 744 and 313)!!!

5. Why is the Indian Govt refusing to guarantee PIA and other PAK airlines guarantee for overflight rights where as PAK is willing to do so for IC-AI as they want to fly nonstop to AFGHANISTAN but the PAK Govt will not bulge till the BJP Govt guarantee that they will never stop overflight rights again. If the Indian govt is so desperate on Afghan flights plus wants to see AI become more profitable then why is it acting so stubbornly over a simple request???

Air India operates 31 weekly flights each way between India and Saudi Arabia.

IC plans on launching 2x weekly A300s on BOM-KHI and 2x weekly A320s on DEL-LHE if and when the go ahead is granted. Not sure if they have made a public statement to that effect though.

No, I'm not. Dulip Mendis was SriLankan anyway. Wrong country!  Big grin

Both. For the last couple years I've spent an average of 5 months each in India/Canada and 2 months on the road. Prior to that I was in Atlanta. I'm currently in Canada, but will be heading back to India at the end of the month and then back to Canada in January.

The Economic Times is wrong. When will you learn to stop believing what you read in the newspapers about Indian aviation?????

The current fleet consists of 7x 744, 2x 743, 3x 742 and 17x 310 for a total of 29 aircraft. They will be adding 2x 744 from Korean Air and 2x 310 from Singapore Airlines by the end of 2003 for a total of 33 planes. They have also received approval to add 2 additional A310s during the first half of 2004 for a total of 35 planes.

With all due respect, no country guarantees overflight rights in perpetuity to any other country even if they are the best of friends, which India and Pakistan absolutely are not. India's position is that they will restrict access to Indian airspace for Pakistani aircraft at times of national security threats, similar to what the United States did on September 11, 2001 and what India did in response to the attack on the Indian parliament on December 13, 2001. Apart from that, there are no conditions on overflight attached. Pakistani carriers have been free to overfly India for over a year now whereas it is Pakistan that restricts access to Indian registered planes from their airspace.

Take an objective look at the situation. India denied overflight to Pakistani carriers from December 28, 2001 till June 10, 2002 in response to a terrorist attack by a group of folks with links to Pakistan. Pakistan denied access to Indian aircraft from December 28, 2001 and continues to do so today. Yet Pakistan continues to blame INDIA for the impasse in the talks? I fail to see the logic there.

India has already permitted Pakistani aircraft to overfly the country. To expect India to surrender sovereign control of airspace in perpetuity to an openly hostile neighbour is simply not realistic.

No. Air India has lost money on Hajj flights for the last few years, with the Government of India subsidizing the shortfall so that it breaks even. Air India receives Rs.12000 (US$250) per passenger roundtrip with costs of operating these flights running in the Rs.22000 (US$480) range per passenger roundtrip.

And how does the payment work? Central Haj committee pays the fee which it collects from the pilgrims?

This is a highly contentious issue. Theoretically, the CHC is supposed to collect enough from the pilgrim to cover all costs but it has not been doing so for the last few years. As a result, the Government of India is picking up the shortfall which has grown to over Rs.21 billion (US$500 million) in the last fiscal year.

And how do the crew feel operating these special flights - just another normal flight or any interesting notes

The crew hate them. The last couple years they have been forced to work them as turnarounds which can lead to 18 hour days on routes like BOM-CCU-JED-BOM - although the BOM-CCU and JED-BOM legs are ferry flights with no passengers aboard (and hence only half pay). The flights also operate with minimum crew complement and a majority of folks are flying for the first time and are totally unfamiliar with aircraft amenities. They routinely have to stop folks from urinating onto the exit doors, smoking in their seats or even defacating in the aisles. At prayer times too, fistfights regularly break out as folks battle to get the prime spots in the aisles to set out their prayer mats.
