Q, Y, W, P ... And so on, what does all the class describing letters mean ? Isn't it enough with just F for first B for business and E for economy ? As far as I have noticed there are at least ten different letters in use, what do they mean and is at the same for every company ? I've heard that some letters are used together with discounted prices and such but it sounds a little bit wired. Anybody have a clue ?

Essentially, each letter stands for a different airfare. They vary between airlines (primarily on the discount fare letters). Usually F is full fare First, J is full fare business, Y is full fare coach. Other standards are codes like B for unrestricted coach. It's just a way to separate the fares and their rules in a reservations system. They allocate seats by letter code and their corresponding airfare.

For example, let's make up a domestic flight here, with made up fares and rules to demonstrate how they may differ:

F - Full fare First class, $1400
A - Mileage upgrade first class (free ticket)
X - Elite upgrade (electronic upgrades subtracted)
Y - Full fare coach, $1100 (may be changed or refunded)
B - Refundable coach, $1000
K - Restricted coach, $700 (change fees, nonrefundable, standby allowed, 7 day advance purchase)
Q - Restricted coach, $625 (same terms as K, but may have a different routing allowed on that route for the fare)
L - Discount coach, $400 (nonrefundable, no standby allowed, 14 day advance purchase)
N - Discount coach, $325 (nonrefundable, 21 day advance purchase)
T - Netsaver discount coach, $200 (only purchasable through website, only valid during certain times of the day and on certain days of the week)

Here are Delta's:

First/Business Elite (revenue): P, F, A, C, D, J, I
Full-Fare Coach: Y, B, M
Mid-Range Coach: H, Q, K, S
Deeply-Discounted Coach: L, U, T
Award Travel: R, O, N, E
First Class Upgrade (using points): V
With the First Class upgrades, it can get interesting. For example, I buy a ticket in Class Q. When I use the upgrade, in my statement it will read:
Delta Flight 2139 from Dallas-Fort Worth, TX to Las Vegas, NV (QV).

A: First Class (discounted?)
O: First Class Award or Upgrade
C: Business Class
D: Business Class Pex
Z: Business Class discounted
I: Business Class Award or Upgrade
Y: Economy unrestricted
B: Economy, Regular Excursion
M: Economy, Instant Purchase Excursion
H: Economy, Super Special Instant Purchase
Q: Economy, Advance Purchase Excursion
V: Economy, but not sure what category: I think it's for Tour Operators
W: Economy, Special Offers
S: Economy, not sure what this is for Long Distance
X: Economy Class Award or Upgrade

Lufthansa Domestic/Intra-Europe:
C, D, Z, Y, B, M, H, Q, V, W should be more or less identical with longhaul
S: Economy, Class for connecting flights for Non-Alliance-Airlines
G, K, L, T: Economy, Classes for new and more flexible Fare Structure

Most Star Alliance Carriers (Execpt AC) have their Booking Classes harmonized. So SK should be similar to the above mentioned LH classes.

'R' has recently been changed to 'Varied Use By Airlines' because Concorde is no longer operating. The above are just guidelines, but by and large most airlines use these codes as described above.
