On a DL 757 from DCA to ATL I once sat next to Congressman from Georgia who played "Cooter" on the Dukes of Hazzard (just can't remember his name!). Newt Gingrich, who was then just a Congressman, walked by and they said hello to each other.

I have flown with a few, but one that I would not have liked was the pax next to my sister-in-law on a flight from DTW to LAN back in the '70's.

There is just something about sitting next to Rod Serling on a Convair Liner that would have made me nervous! I hoped they checked for gremlins when they got in.

The whole football team of German record champion Bayern Munich and several A- and B-celebrities and journalists from German TV. If you fly Business on domestic routes often its damn unlikely not to sit next to a celebrity once in a while. Some are funny, some don´t want to be recognized at all. I found no difference in talking to famous people if a conversation started for some reason or the other. But I never forced that "hey, I know you!" And I never made the experience that people were asking for autographs on aeroplanes, fortunately.

On a flight to Hawaii on Northwest (because AA flight attendants had gone on strike in 93) I was 1 seat away from Will Smith, and a Concorde flight I was 1 seat away from Patrick Stewart of Star Trek the next generation. Also on that flight was David Cooperfields wife. I cant remember her name,,,,,,but she is a beautiful woman. I kept waiting for her disappear and reappear in the bathroom Since the cabin is so small on tht plane you are near everyone on the plane if you walk around 1 time.

I have a friend at work who saw Ron Jeremy get off the plane right before he boarded. Was wearing a big yellow jumpsuit with gold chains! I heard that the pilots asked him to sign their logbooks, and all the women were wondering who the hell he was.

Cooter was played by Ben Jones. He made a run for Congress last year up in VA and was trounced.

My famous person was also a politician. Back in 2000 on a DL flight ATL-DCA, sitting across the aisle from me in First Class was Rep. Bob Barr (one of the ringleaders of the impeachment attempt on Clinton) as well as the Congressman for the district I lived in at the time, Mac Collins (who might be the next Senator as he is running for the seat Sen. Turncoat, mean Miller is not running for).

Working out at the airport, I see well-known people every week. Just the other day I saw George Clinton (I guess Delta's the new Mothership).

On a Los Angeles to Honolulu flight, I sat behind Tom Selleck at the height of his "Magnum P.I." fame. He was wearing one of his trademark aloha shirts, and was Magnum-charming to the fluttering stewardesses.

Half-way through the flight, I'd been staring at Selleck for so long that my boyfriend began to feel ignored, and huffed "Would you rather be sitting next to him than me? To which I replied "Don't ask a question you aren't prepared to hear the answer to..."  Wink/being sarcastic

On a Continental/Virgin flight to Washington, I sat with Lady Mary Archer and young Jeffrey, old Jeffrey being in jail at the time. A bit of polite chat. Coincidentally, there was a photo of Lady M. and young J. in an issue of "Hello" which was placed in everyone's seat.

Well, it wasn't really celebrities - but politicians...

Flying from Harare to Frankfurt, Robert Mugabe (President of Zimbabwe), his wife and about half of the government had taken over large parts of the Air Zimbabwe 767-200 flying that trip: fortunately, Mugabe didn't do what he usually does: simply take a plane out of the schedule and use it for his own purpose - that way we would have probably been stuck in Harare for days, so this was really an advantage... I've never experienced such a soft takeoff and landing on another flight - but all anouncements took a bit longer than usual, as they all started with "Comrade President Mugabe and Mrs. Mugabe, Members of the Government of Zimbabwe, ...".

And, shortly before last year's elections here in Germany, I flew from Hannover to Munich and had Kurt Beckstein (Bavarian Interior Minister, then expected to either succeed Edmund Stoiber as Bavarian Prime Minister or to also take up some position in the federal government if Stoiber had won the elections) sitting directly in front of me.

Smile - it confuses people!

Megastars, if they fly commercial at all, often purchase and block the seats around them, so the chance of the average person sitting next to a major celeb, especially now that Concorde is history, is pretty slim. On a slightly related note, was once on a GF flight AUH-LHR with a stop in Bahrain, and the FA mentioned to me they were boarding a VIP, a Sheikh, at BAH....So the door opens at BAH and ground staff escorts this boy of about 7 or 8, dressed in full dishdasha, up to the First Class section...and that was the Sheikh!

Well not necessarily on the plane, but i was pretty grumbly once at LHR when this guy cut in front of me with his luggage trolley. I had no idea it was the bass player from the Police (flying economy that day- 5 rows in front of me). Ive also seen Nick Cave in the economy line at LHR, and sat next to a tour manager on the LHR-LAX run who was Martin Gore's neighbor (from Depeche Mode) and had the band Pitchshifter (whom he was managing on tour at that time) with him as well. They would come up and talk to him on occasion, and they were very nice boys, considering the angry sort of music they play  Smile
