I was done refueling the Swiss MD-11 today and was looking for the Mechanic to see if the plane needed anymore fuel. I walked into the MD-11 and walked through first class into the cockpit to talk to him. As i was walking out of the plane i stopped in amazment and looked at those damn seats. Who ever can afford to fly in those is gonna ride in comfort the whole way. Very very nice plane, to bad there leaving soon. BTW: today is the first time i have ever stepped foot into another airlines airplane other then AA's. I couldnt believe it but when i thought about it i was stund to remember that.

I've had the pleasure of flying Swiss's Business Class, but in the A330. It's a great product and for an airline that's been through a rough time, their cabin crews are really friendly and helpful, that goes for in economy as well. The 330s have PTVs in every seat, relatively sophisticated system with alot of programming compared to others I have seen. Whether with the MD-11 or the 'buses, let's hope Swiss can stay independent and continue the tradition of aviation excellence in Switzerland!

He took about 48k Gallons today if i remember right....i only did a LH 747/ Alitalia 742 (operated by atlas) and the swiss MD-11....i work for GlobeGround at ORD.

Md11lover- I think the MD-11 is a GREAT looking aircraft, i sure wish i had the fuel range it was suppose to because i loved it when it was with AA, i got to see it all the time at DFW when i was a kid. Now its just the 777 (thats fine with me i love that plane) but still AA was a big operator of DC-10s and MD-11s and wished they still had 747s....maybe someday though.

I think that SWISS did a GREAT job on the interiors of there aircraft....VERY clean and VERY cozzy. The cockpit was spotless and very neat. Wish i was on that flight but oh well.....someday.

I had a chance to fly Swiss business class last year (on the A330). Amazing, unbelievable service, so I am assuming than first class would be something out of the ordinary.

I have had the privilege of flying in that beautiful aircraft in Business and First.

ZRH-NRT-ZRH
ZRH-BKK-ZRH

The service is exceptional and the F/As are highly professional and I am sure very recommended.

The Md-11 is not my favorite plane but I must admit that the three engine layout does make it stick out and don't get me started with the wingtips!!! Brilliant! I also think that the new Swiss colors on the Md-11 are better than the Swissair colors. I have also flown on the A330 in Business and First. I prefer the cabin layout in the MD-11 though but it the A330 does look brighter...why I do not know!

I will continue to fly with Swiss as much as possible!

BA may have found the slogan "The World's favorite airline" but in Swiss' case, this would be appropriate "My favorite airline!"

Great feedback Bobs89irocz!

unfortunately I never flew Swiss MD11, only Swissair on a BKK-ZRH and a ZRH-KIX-ZRH but I'm looking forward to fly it on Swiss before it leaves!

Bob,
As a side note: I had the pleasure of flying Swiss recently JFK-GVA and ZRH-JFK on two of their A330's (HB-IQD and HB-IQF). I was in economy class but they were both EXCELLENT flights. Swiss does a wonderful job, and if I ever have the chance to fly them again I won't pass the offer up. The MD-11 is one of my favorite birds, and I love the looks of them in Swiss's scheme. That aircraft coupled with Swiss's outstanding service would make for a good flight!

I flew on Swissair's MD-11 JNB-ZRH-JNB, I remember at the time it was the most uncomfortable Economy seat I've ever flown on. But the ticket was free, so I won't hear a word said against SR. I'm flying LX's 330 to Boston in December, I hear those seats aren't the most comfortable either, but I'll give them a try.

My first MD11 flight was on my last Swissair flight (SR116 ZRH-MIA). Got an upgrade to Business class  Smile I will be flying on the MD11 next December to New York.

ConcordeLoss:

Swiss is fasing out their MD11 in favour of the A340s. The last two MD11s will leave the Swiss fleet by next Summer.

Hi!

I'm also one of the lucky ones that flew the SWISS MD11 last December. My flight was a long one, ZRH/LAX but I must say that I had a great time all way to California. The service was good, the plane was in excelent condition ( HB-IWM ) and very, very powerfull. I recall when we left ZRH the speed was fantastic and after beeing airborne that nice and tight left turn is awsome. I was sad that it was cloudy and we couldn't see Kloten. Then all way to LAX everything went smooth, we saw some parts of Ireland, Canada and finnally USA. The arrival to LAX was in the middle of a big storm ( something really unusuall in California ) so our pilot adviced us that instead of landing over LAX we had to aproach by the Pacific ocean ( that was different.... ), so we started to lose all the visibility until the last 1 or 2 minutes, we saw the ocean running under, we lost again visibility and then the landing - due to those terrible weather conditions the landing was actually quite hard - our pilot was a great professional, we touched first really hard but we lost contact and had to get it latter, this time a great one with a lot of control from the pilot, really a great control.
I'll never forget my flight with SWISS MD11 and it's already history for me, HB-IWM is out of service and from December on SWISS will start with the 343, I'll be flying back on December 15th. in the new Airbus so I consider myself very lucky to have flown the MD11 before beeing retired.
Regards

It has been occasionally rumored that SWISS will be acquired by Lufthansa, which makes sense in terms of culture and fleet composition. However, it would be great to see them continue to operate independently as their service is distinctive and superb, exactly what you'd expect from Switzerland.

Hi!

I would like also to receive a lecture on that take over that "makes sense in terms of culture".
Only if it's because of the language I presume, and even that swiss is not german!

Do you think the A343 configuration will be as comfortable as the A330 one?
I personally am not a big fan of the A340, therefore quite disappointed regarding Swiss' withdrawal of its Md11s, but if Swiss keeps up with its impeccable service, the A343 might be quite a good investment after all.

Hi!

According with what SWISS says the 343 will have more space than the MD11. The configuration is smaller, the MD11 is 2-4-3 and the 343 is 2-4-2. One thing I know for sure, with the PTV's the 343 will have much better feedback from passengers than the MD11. But the MD11 was a great airliner in their time, we can't forget that they're around since the early 90's.

As far as the PTVs are concerned, that is definitely a plus and plays an important role in passenger comfort. However, even though the MD11 has an extra seat, i still think they are more spacious than the A343. I have flown AF A343 SFO-CDG many times in coach class and despite the fact that there are only 2 seats on the sides, i found it quite uncomfortable. Just my opinion, but we ll see, id definitely want to give it a try.
