Hi All,

First time here in the forum, just spent my $25 about an hour ago  Big grin, about time I did, I've been browsing pictures every 1-3 days here for the last 1-2 years, LOL.

Anyways, I really need some help on airfare to Poland for Summer 2004.

Now I don't fly too much ( as my money is spent on other things ), so im not too familiar with when the best time to buy tickets are and such sort.

Im mostly interested in traveling on June 14th 2004 from Michigan to Rzeszow Poland ( RZE ) or Krakow Poland ( II International (KRK / EPKK), Poland">KRK ), preferably RZE though, as its closer to my relatives house. II International (KRK / EPKK), Poland">KRK Isn't too bad but its about a 2-3 hour drive to my relatives house via a taxi, plus costs more money. I plan to return about June 30th ( around there ).

Anyways what I need help with is, when should I start buying tickets to Poland?

I found awesome fares already ( By the way, I live near FNT airport in Michigan, about 30 miles east of FNT airport, for those who aren't familiar with FNT, its about 45-60 miles north of DTW ).

Normally I take LOT Polish airlines to Europe, however they tend to be on the expensive side ( $1100-$1200 ) ( DTW-ORD UAL, ORD-EPWA LOT 763, EPWA-RZE EuroLOT ATR42/72, same way back ).

So far, I found the cheapest way to go is actually to connect through London ( Preferably Heathrow, EGLL ). Each couple weeks I notice some airline offering low fares to London, or like to Vienna, Frankfurt, etc.

Like right now, I found an awesome fare I could take to Poland, in which I would travel - MBS ( Saginaw Michigan, about a 1hr 40 min drive from my house )to ORD ( UAL CRJ ), ORD-LHR ( UAL 772 ), LHR-EPWA ( LOT 737 ), EPWA-RZE ( Eurolot ATR ), all for about $850-$885 per person. That sure does beat the $1200 LOT polish airlines price.

Well, im curious though. Like 2 weeks ago, I could have taken Austrian Airlines out of Washington DC to Vienna, then Vienna to Krakow, all for around $835. That deal has since passed though. Now its the UAL deal in connecting with ORD and LHR in which is around $850-$885

But, should I wait a while to buy tickets? When is really the best time to buy tickets to Europe? ( Like Month, Time of day, etc., I heard that Wednesday Night at 1am they have special steal-airfares, I haven't looked into this but is this true? ). Family members have told me to wait till January, cause they will have " deals ", should I wait? Are they correct?

Which airline ( lets say all ticket prices were the same ), would be the best to take for the Atlantic crossing? ( Please pick from these, cause I will be able to fly with connections by the following to Poland: United Airlines, American Airlines, Continental Airlines, Austrian Airlines, Lufthansa, British Airways, LOT Polish Airlines, Northwest Airlines )

Also, what website ( US Based ) would you recommend for great airfares? Usually I always use Expedia, Orbitz seems about the same as Expedia too ( prices are the same ). Has anyone tried Priceline? Where you name your price and they look it up to see if an airline will accept it? Is it worth trying Priceline? Which one would you recommend?

You might wonder why im interested in buying the tickets now, well, I want to get good seats, be able to pick the aircraft or airline I want to travel on, and get good fares too ( If they don't have better ones coming soon or after January, etc. )

Sorry guys for all the questions, its just that there are so many options and so many things to consider I figured I'd ask the pro's here  Big grin

Thanks in advance for the replies!

Warszawa,
Most of my traveling is ex-FNT these days as well. You're asking a difficult question. $800-$1200 is a "reasonable" airfare to Europe during summer. However, sometimes you'll see ultra-cheap fares... for example, for one day this past summer CO had DTW-anywhere in Europe they/their codeshares with KL flew in Europe for $550 inclusive (any day of the week). Of course this sale wasn't advertised and you more-or-less had to get lucky... StudentUniverse provides cheap fares for students as does Priceline.

It's more-or-less hit or miss for summer travel to Europe - a good way to spend miles if you can find seats! I wouldn't worry about the airline -- if you see a cheap fare, grab it!!

Lemme know if you have any more questions.

Wow $550 is awesome!

But obviously, I cant wait till summer for that. I check fares everyday, sometimes I see awesome fares, but choose not to buy them as I keep saying to myself " Well, others tell me January is best, so don't buy it now " or to wait for more deals.

So the best thing im guessing is just when I find an excellent fare that even beats other deals, to get it then? So I shouldn't expect any better fares starting in January through March? Or its more of a Lucky situation, like during those times maybe I'll get lucky and hit a dirt cheap fare.

For now I guess I'll just keep checking everyday  Smile

My partner & I have travelled to the Czech Republic twice in late fall, and got great deals. Usually, fall through to spring are the best times (except during the holidays) to find specials and bargains on all transatlantic fares.

Finally made it to an airline mecca!

If I were in your situation, I would keep checking at Travelocity every day. They have a fare watcher that will alert you when prices drop between your specified city pairs. Also I'd sign up for emails from Lufthansa, LOT, and any other airline that might serve Poland. Air France, British Airways, and SAS also come to mind.

Summer airfares can be mighty pricey; all three of my European trips have been in fall or spring, from ORD to FRA, and none have been more than $450 roundtrip. March 2000 and October 2001 were $360 roundtrip after taxes.

Good luck!

Hello, I am from just outside of Detroit. If you give me the dates, I will be happy to look for flights for you and keep you posted. I love doing that kind of stuff. I travel a lot and am pretty good at finding good fairs. I have also traveled to Poland a fews years back in 9th grade. I flew on KLM for all legs out of DTW. I recomend KLM if you can find it. Let me know about the dates, glad to help.

Thanks all for the replies! Greatly appreciate it.

Dtwrunner - Thanks for your offer, that's very nice! If you want to or your curious about looking for fares, im interested in traveling mostly June 14th to June 30th 2004. Those are my 2 favorite dates, pretty much. If you need my email let me know ( Unless you want to pm me over the forum, but it might be pretty hard to remember how my name is spelled, hehe ). I took would love to fly to AMS, just cause I'd get on NWA's A333 ( As an airbus fan, and the hips and hops about the A333 NWA has, man I'd love to fly on that thing! )

It can be + - a couple days off of those, however I can only take 2 weeks off vacation from work, so the stay in Poland cant be too much.

The places in Poland I would need to go to would be RZE ( Top Pick, closest to my relatives, about 25 minutes away ), 2nd top pick would be II International (KRK / EPKK), Poland">KRK ( About 2 hrs away ).

Those are pretty much the only airports I will be able to fly to ( RZE and II International (KRK / EPKK), Poland">KRK ).

As far as Michigan airports go', I can fly out of LAN, MBS, FNT, or DTW, any of those.

June 14th and June 30th are my top choices date-wise, but I can also travel in July too. If you could try to avoid August, I hate traveling during that month.

Wnfan - Thanks for the tip about the farewatcher! I'll singup for watching around 50 fares, if that's even possible, lol.

The Czech Airlines tend to be the cheapest. However, their tickets sell fast, especially during the summer. If they do sell out, your second best bet is Finnair. From my experience they have a lot of people going to Warsaw connecting in HEL. Unfortunately they only fly out of JFK, but they have a codeshare with AA, so that shouldn't be a problem.

A mile of runway takes you to the world. A mile of highway takes you a mile.

Levg79 - Are you sure about that? I checked CSA and they have expensive fares, $913 from JFK-PRG, PRG-WAW, and i would need to somehow get a flight DTW-JFK or something, and also WAW-RZE, thats another $300-$400 worth right there on that one.

CSA i did see has some real nice deals once in a while, last time i saw them offering a great deal was about 5 months ago though, but that was some winter sale thing. Dont know about taking an A310 transatlantic though, im an airbus fan but man... A310, lol, who operates those nowadays ( passenger-wise anyways ).

Finnair was also the most expensive out of all. The JFK-Helsinki flight is about $1200 ( Thats not including any DTW-JFK flight, or Helsinki-Warsaw flight, or Warsaw-Rzeszow flight ), for that price i could fly out of DTW with connections and go all the way to RZE.

Is there a special website ( like a european website ) that gives you cheap fares on CSA and finnair Levg79? Maybe i was looking in the wrong places ( I checked Finnairs and CSA's website, but there might be some special euro websites with better fares im guessing? )
