There is an interesting interview with ANA?s CEO/President Yoji Ohashi in this month's edition of Air Transport World.
ATW: Why did ANA, an A320 operator, order 737NGs?
YO: From 2005 we are going to rationalise our fleet. At the moment we operate nine types of aircraft, but by 2009 we hope to be able to bring that down to three types ? large, medium and small. In the small category we operate A320s and 737s and we want to have just one type for greater efficiency. In December last year we set up the new aircraft selection committee. They looked at it from a technical, operational and economic standpoints and we decided on the 737NG. We are still using the A320. They are a good aircraft and we have no problem with them from any point of view, but in terms of efficient operation and fit with our network the 737NG came out better.
.. At least that dispels the myth of big problems with their A32S aircraft that was floated around various forums.
ATW: Is ANA interested in Boeing's 7E7?
YO: We obviously have been in talks with Boeing. From 2005 we are going to begin retiring 767-300s and the 7E7 is one contender for the replacement. We would be using it short-haul on domestic routes but Boeing is talking about [it] as a long-haul aircraft. Our request of them [is to build a short-range version]. Possibly in a year we will be able to come to a conclusion. We have to consider the A330 as well.
ATW: Is ANA interested in Airbus's A380?
YO: In January I went to Toulouse and saw the mock-up and it was absolutely fantastic. It is something we have to consider in the future. In terms of airport facilities, we don?t think the aircraft can be used domestically. It would be a long-haul and cargo aircraft from out point of view. We are not in the process of considering it right now. Airbus President Noel Forgeard said that even if we had wanted to order one we could not get it until 2009.

If ANA orders 7E7 they won't order A330s. Since if they wanted an aircraft with the capacity of the A330 for long haul routes, all they'd have to do is order the 7E7, since they'd already have the 7E7 SR variant in their fleet.
