US Domestic Route Map

Is there any source where you can find a route map of all direct flights in the U.S.? If not, has anyone ever plotted out a bunch of them on the Great Circle Mapper website (gc.kls2.com) with which they can provide me a link? If there are route maps of other countries too, I would also be interested to see them. Thanks.

THey have one in the inflight attache magazine. Although its kinda cool you can barely distinguish anything on the east coast. It's just a mass of lines from PHL, DCA, LGA, BOS, and CLT.

I'm pretty sure 762er meant all domestic flights in the US, but as Usairways85 mentioned, the route map of the nations 7th largest airline is a mass of lines. This leads me to believe that a map showing every domestic route on any airline would be one massive indistinguishable blob. You're probably better off either sticking to one airline at a time, or checking timetables between two points.

I'd rather be flying.

what i am saying is, US has big operations at PHL and PIT and sizeable ops at DCA, LGA, and BOS. All a matter of 1-2 inches away from each other on a route map. So when you draw a total of a couple hundred lines from all of those cities it's just one big blob over the Northeast. However you can distinguish the routes that are further to the midwest, south and west coast.

Well, it seems the question is related to all flights in the entire UNITED STATES (a.k.a U.S.) on all carriers, not just US Airways.. and those routes would create a big blog over the entire country.

Can anybody get me links to the great circle mapper where people have plotted quite a bit of the direct routes in the U.S.? I've seent these maps before. I just don't want to take the time to plot them all out on it.

I have sometimes used this for flights I have taken, although it will map the great circle route between any two points. Make sure you click "display map." It also gives you the great circle distance, as well as the initial heading. If you input the aircraft's groundspeed, it will also do time calculations.

You just reminded me that the OAG back in the 70s use to have a fold out map of the USA and every non-stop route was on there with the airlines two-letter code(s) next to it indicating who flew the route. This was before deregulation, so I guess it was easier to keep up the map.

With routes changing all the time, it would be more difficult to do now. But in my opinion...route maps are god! I have a old Delta and United route map from the 1960s (the fold out kind) and you could trace your route as you flew across the country. I guess we now have GPS. Tracking flights real time has it's merits.

I use to write to every airline in the world and just sit down with an atlas, find the cities the airline served and create my own route map by connecting the dots from the schedule. Good way to learn the system. I just did this for Eastern Airlines from my 1962 OAG just to see where EA flew back then. Man, that was one airline!

Computers have a lot of information in them but it is sometimes hard to grasp the entire operation unless you do this.

In KLM's inflight magazine they combined their alliance partner routes onto their route maps. With Alaska, Continental and Northwest combined it looked like one blob around Detroit, Minneapolis, Cleveland and Houston. Adding in American, United and Delta would make it a psychedelic blur LOL.. So unless you have a map the size of a basketball court I'd stick to the individual airlines so the lines end up having some meaning to them.

Wow, Coronado, I have several pre-degregulation OAGs and I've never seen that route maps you mention.

I sat down a few years ago and drew out a Southwest route map using Adobe Illustrator. I've updated in periodically to keep up with their announcements. The modern Southwest's route map is so complicated it has to been seen to be believed...

Dunno when the OAG stopped including that fold-out US map-- but I'm guessing it was the early 1960s or late 1950s.

Route maps are easy for the network carriers- mostly it's just a bunch of hubs and spokes.

VectorVictor is right about Southwest -- their network is so complicated that it's almost impossible to even draw anymore. On the back of their timetables, they used to show the route network, but around 1997 or so they got rid of the routes and only displayed the destinations.

Ok, something a little diffrent but is there images on the net where it shows a radar image of the US with every aircraft well most aircraft already in the sky. I see it in the news time to time and it's just covered with little green planes pretty much.

Star Alliance has a neat screen saver that shows a point on a global map for every flight by a member at evey moment.. so as time passes you see it progress to it's destination. neat to see the barrage of planes heading to Europe each evening around 7pm... includes all member airlines.. so sort of what you are looking for, is reali time bases on schedules not actual aircraft O would presume.

Official Airline Guide. Dunno how many pocket-size editions they have-- but the Worldwide is a monthly publication, size of a large telephone book, that supposedly lists all scheduled airline flights. You can imagine the old ones are collectors items.
