Terminal 3 at Newark holds AA and US. AA has gates 30-35, and US 36-39 respectively. When I was there a few days ago AA was using all there gates to the hubs, while US was only using gate 39. Since US is only serving PIT and CLT from EWR, and those gates are not being used, is there any future to AA taking over some of these unused US gates?

Those US Aiways gates in A-3 are former TWA, US Airways moved to A-3 from A-2 when AA bought TWA.

Air Canada, ATA and some other charters are now using US Airways former A-2 gates.

Since AA has been operating out of the gates they have at EWR since 1972, and their current schedule of flights is shrinking rather than expanding compared to just two years ago why would they need more gates?

The gates were fine for 30 years, they were fine when AA was flying to London Heathrow, St.Louis etc just last year.

Now the Heathrow flight is gone, as are the St.Louis flights (most of them). So why would they need more?..

US also has flights to PHL

I was wondering the same thing though (i mentioned this in my trip report)

I guess eventually they may be able to sell space

US only has one daily Mesa CRJ from PHL. US Airways Express used to operate several Trans States J41's in/out of EWR, but i dont know what ever happened to that

In the late Eighties-mid '90s US Airways had quite a large operation at EWR, for a number of years they were the #2 carrier at EWR behind CO.

They had nonstop DC-9, 737, M-80, 727 service (no RJs) from Newark to..

Boston, Kansas City, Dayton, Indianapolis, Pittsburgh, Jacksonville, Raleigh, Charlotte, Norfolk, Richmond, Albany, Rochester, Syracuse, Buffalo, Washington National and a few others I can't recall right now.

They operated out of A-2, they owned all of A-2 and operated a large presence there untill about 1995.

I flew Buffalo-Newark on a US Airways DC-9 in Summer of 1991, and I also flew Piedmont (before the merger) from EWR-Boston.

Until a few years ago didn't USEX fly to a few Upstate NY cities such as ALB, BUF, and SYR? I also know they flew to BWI a few times a day with I think the Dash 8's. Is the PHL service new? I know they haven't always had that.
