So: how do you think JAT will optimize its fleet?

You asked if Jat Airways plans to fly intercontinental routes.

In fact they are now flying to New York every thursday and sunday, since the middle of september. The agreement was reached with Uzbekistan Airways, since their loads were not sufficient, and they needed a stopover somewhere in Europe. Before introducing the Tashkent - Belgrade - New York route, it was instead making its stop in Birmingham.

Jat Airways has 105 out of 210 seats on the Boeing 767-300ER. I believe it is 90 in economy, and 15 in business class. Apparently the loads are very good. The flight is operated with Uzbek and Serbian crew. Some Jat Airways pilots have completed their training for the 767, and fly alongside their Uzbek colleagues.

Otherwise the plan is to lease or sell the DC-10, and other intercontinental routes would be explored later. Of particular interest would be Chicago and Toronto.

By next year they will add more 737-400s and ATR-72s.

So the actual fleet should consist of three aircraft models:

Boeing 737-300s
Boeing 737-400s
ATR-72s

Seems a smart restructuring plan. I think you can find 2nd generation B737 at very good prices, since many airlines are gradually replacing them either with 737NG or with A318-321. About the ATR's: does JAT follow a similar strategy to LOT, to outsource the ATR42 and fly with the JAT brand only with ATR72? By the way, what do you (or people with JAT) think about ATR's?

I personally like the restructuring plan, since it is very feasible. The company is definately striving for simplification, and operating one family of aircraft for its medium range flights definately makes sense. Other than its original nine Boeing 737-300s, Jat Airways also owns three ATR-72s. The planes are well kept, and the passenger cabins do not really differ from the newer generation 737s. Inflight television is one feature that passengers enjoy on the longer flight durations.

Boeing 737-300s, 737-400s and ATRs will continue to be added to the fleet, however these planes would probably be acquired on lease. Perhaps this move forces the company to use its aircraft more efficiently, since every added aircraft must be justified. The fact that they are leasing these additional 737 classics also opens the opportunity for an easier fleet transformation (to the newer generation 737) when the time comes, since Jat Airways would not have to worry about selling the additional planes.

From this strategy there will be no direct replacement for the DC-9, however the 727s are being replaced with the 737-400s. Perhaps the smaller 737-500 would be added to fix the gap, however its probably not that necessary. Since the load is growing, the 737-300 would sufficiently replace the DC-9 routes, especially since Jat Airways is in the process of establishing a low cost carrier (Intair Link) that should perform feeder flight to Belgrade; thus increasing loads on European and Mediterranean flights. The dominant low cost market will be centered on Macedonia (Skopje and Ohrid), Bosnia (Sarajevo and Banja Luka), Albania (Tirana), Bulgaria (Sofia), etc.

I think i have exhausted the fleet description.

JU101, on what flights does JAT use the DC9? If they really need that, they could replace them with the B717, but anyway, is their capacity so different from the capacity of the 737's?

Jat Airways Boeing 737-300s are configured with 126 seats, while the DC-9 has 102 seats. Clearly its not far off, and i am sure they can easily fill the extra capacity in the future, particularly with generous growth (5% growth in the Serbian market this year alone).
