Air Sahara created history on Friday evening when it became the first private airline in India to operate an international flight.
Even though flight S2 501 operated by a 168-seater Boeing 737-800 operated with zero revenue passengers, the airline officials and journalists aboard were accorded a warm welcome by the Sri Lankan government.
Air Sahara intends to offer daily 737 service to Colombo nonstop from Mumbai and direct from Delhi via Bangalore.

Air Sahara's DEL-BLR-CMB flight....is it allowed to take domestic pax on the DEL-BLR segment? If not then its stupid to fly to CMB from DEL via BLR and not nonstop. All flights from Indian cities should be nonstop to CMB as its only a short 2-3 hr flight from anywhere in India.
Do you think that when Pak and Ind resume flights between the 2 countries that either govt would allow their private airlines to fly to each other's main cities?
Btw Tajikistan Airways and Aeroflot have been awarded 5th freedom pax and cargo rights by the Indian Govt to fly to DEL via KABUL!!!
Apart from the airline they have major interests in parabanking, television, media and construction.
All flights from Indian cities should be nonstop to CMB as its only a short 2-3 hr flight from anywhere in India.
Admirable as the thought may be, did it occur to you that perhaps the demand doesn't exist to launch multiple daily 168-seater flights into a market at 7 days notice?

These flights to Colombo seem to more iconic than anything else - to prove that a private Indian carrier can operate internationally in the face of the hideous Government duopoly of AI/IC.
