Now that DL is installing the nice flat screen gate info systems in most major cities, why is it that one of it's hubs, DFW, doesn't have any?? Is this showing DL's lack of commitment to this hub?

I've wondered that myself. I wonder if the GIDS deployment revolves around a stations' (or hub in this case) profitability?

Which, DL lack of committment can be directly linked to the lack of profitability, its not DLs fault of whats going down (or out) of DFW with DL, but the travelling public's fault.

Well, from what I hear, DFW is modestly profitable - because of the RJs.

That particular system is one of the more costly systems. TOL is in the process of installing the same one and the cost is well into the 6 figures - and that would just be for 3-4 main FIDS stations and 8 gates (until the west expansion is done). Imagine what it would cost them for DFW.

The flight information boards are flat panel, and they are absolutely gigantic. As for the gate areas, give it some time. You have to remember that most of DFW is RJ now, and the RJ gates at the hubs do not have them. So basically, its about 10-15 gates. The Daktronics displays will be in eventually.

I've also wondered why Delta hasn't installed the gate displays at DFW's Terminal E. My thinking (at first) was that Delta is waiting until the construction related to the new interterminal train is completed; however, Delta has installed the displays in Terminal C at BOS, and they'll be moving into the new Terminal A in about a year-and-a-half. Even significantly smaller DL stations (PBI, for example) have had the displays installed.

FLL does have it and anyone who is familier with D6-8 at FLL knows how confusing it is. their screens are right next to each other, as they share seating areas. I do like the purpose, and where else can you see the open seats on the Cincinatti flight that is a regional jet that you are so lucky not to be taking!

ScottB,
As far as I have heard the gates in Terminal E are owned by the City and 'shared' amongst the airlines and therefore can't be customized to one airline. While their other gates are considered Delta-owned and can be modified to Delta's choice. I'm sure that at some point the city will let Delta add their screens if offered enough 'consideration'...

Well, given that DL has used terminal E pretty much since day 1 at DFW, I wouldn't think that the airport board (remember it's not just one city - but both Dallas and Fort Worth) would stop them from installing monitors. I was under the impression that DL owned their gates at Terminal E (main and satellite). As for 'sharing' amongst the airlines, I have never seen an airline just stop in and use a gate there. The only airlines that have been there in the last two years are AirTran, Northwest, Delta (and partners), and Champion Air.

Here is some information regarding the "GIDS" or plasma screens in the gate areas for Delta at DFW.

Prior to 9/11, DFW was scheduled for the GIDS to be installed. From what was told from ATL, there were 20 of the screens in storage waiting for electronic hardware for DFW to come in, the screens were stolen. After that, the project was put on hold.

Then after 9/11, the project for DFW (very expensive) was put on hold for 18 months. Then just a couple of months ago, DFW GIDS were financed back into the budget since DFW had made the corner in profitability...the GIDS will be installed in Feb 04. Gates 10-11-12-14-15-16-17-18, & 36-38 (intl gates).

A side note, CO moves from terminal B to E this Thursday 11/20.
F9 scheduled to move from E to B after Jan 04.

Terminal E will consist of...

Gates 2-3 vacant
Gates 4-6 NW
Gates 7-9 CO
Gates 10-18 DL mainline
Gates 20-35 DL connection
Gates 36-38 DL,AM, charters and Intl. flights. (till 2005).

Is it true that DL's Gate Displays show the Processing List for upgrades? If so, isn't that a breach of security and privacy? Having people's names up there on the display?

Yes, You are correct - the current GIDS system shows the Processing List for upgrades. But where you are partly wrong is the name. It only shows the last three letters of the surname and the first letter of your first name (eg. Jon Smith would be Smi/J - so there is no violation of privacy.

It shows the last three letters of the last name and the first initial. The passengers do not have to go to the podium, the gate reader scans their current seat request and prints out a boarding pass.
As a matter of privacy how is it less private than "Passenger Ed Smith please check at the gate for your seat assignment" and then everyone in the area being able to watch Mr. Smith walk to the podium thereby giving a face to the name?

Thanks N839MH!

That is great info! Can't wait for CO to come to Term. E. I had to fly DFW-CLE-IND-DFW last week, and instead of taking the CO DFW-CLE direct, I took a DL flight through CVG just to avoid leaving from Term. B and returning to E. Glad that all Skyteam domestic airlines (to be) are sitting together in the hubs.

Personally as an agent who does not have the GIDS system installed in the Delta Connection gates on C-Concourse in Atlanta we would LOVE them here for the agents as well as the passengers. It relieves a lot of pressure on the Gate agents information is passed straight on the passengers. I know when I Non-Rev I don't even have to approach the podium or listen to my name to be paged when cleared for travel on the flight. Just look up at the screen. If a flight is delayed the information is displayed right up there on the screen. Arrival and connection information is displayed on the screen and even the current weather is displayed as well as an little extended forecast. Surprisingly enough Orlando does not have them there yet but I think that as an agent they are a great too and as a passenger very convenient. Delta is doing what I think is a great job of automating passenger processing From IROP situations straight through to boarding the next flight almost. No long lines to wait in if you have an E-Ticket. You can even check your baggage at the self check in kiosks. I think it is great, again from both points of view. As a passenger and as an agent. Just my 2 cents worth

Does this mean the end for the DFW Presidents Club, or is another being built?

Since COs gates are right next to DLs Crown Room, maybe they will use that instead. Alternatively, I did see some new space between gates 10 and 9 - where they are building out for the new people mover. One side is occupied by the new Crown Room.

CO is building a new Presidents club in between gates 7 & 8 @ DfW.

Sure seems likes lots of money being spent when there is brand new
Crown Room next to gate 10.
