KARACHI, Nov 19: Pakistan International Airlines would resume flights to the Central Asian Republics of Uzbekistan and Kazakhstan from December 16.

The national carrier would add two new international destinations on its operations by starting flights to Glasgow (Scotland) and Houston (United States) from April and June, 2004, respectively, said PIA Director Marketing Kamran Hassan.

Talking to PPI, he said the flights to Tashkent and Almaty, capitals of Uzbekistan and Kazakhstan, would be operated once-a-week from Karachi via Islamabad. He said PIA's Haj operation involving the airlift of 1.20 lakh pilgrims to the holy land and back would begin with the first Haj flight leaving on Dec 26.

During the pre and post-Haj operation, the airline would operate a total of 430 special flights from Islamabad, Lahore, Karachi, Peshawar and Quetta to Jeddah and back on its aircraft, he stated.

Kamran Hassan said in addition, the national carrier had taken on lease two Boeing 747s from Orient Thai private airline to operate Haj flights. He also stated that PIA was scheduled to receive delivery of the first state-of-the-art new Boeing 777 in January 2004, which it had purchased from the Boeing Company. The second new Boeing is due for delivery in February next year.

**I wonder what route IAH will be...wouldnt be surprised if its either via BHX or MAN and I bet GLA will be served with an A 310-300. IAH will probably get the new B 772ER. I hope they dont make GFs mistake by extending their JFK flights to IAH  Sad

The best route for PIA to IAH would be KHI-LHE-MAN-IAH twice a week...wouldnt have DFW been a better choice for PIA as its a bigger city and a massive hub of AA plus UAL and DL (smaller scale hubs for latter 2).

While I would love for PIA to come to DFW, IAH is a better market for it. Simply put, Houston is a much, much more international city than Dallas. The oil and energy industry, perhaps the most international of all business, is centered in Houston. Aside from New York, there is probably not a more robust city in the US for international business. IAH already has more international traffic than DFW, with airlines such as KLM and Air France -- two that DFW does not have. There is also regularly scheduled charter service to Africa for oil company employees doing business there.

Dallas is not the oil-driven city that Houston is. Therefore, you can expect Houston to get more flights to exotic destinations. Word is that Emirates or another Middle Eastern airline will be adding Houston as a destination. Keep your eyes peeled.

** Also, while the DFW metro area is slightly larger than the Houston metro area, Houston is a larger city than Dallas.

I live in Waco, right in the middle between Houston and Dallas. Houston feels like a much bigger city and is defiantly more international than Dallas.

Houston is HUGE. Dallas can't really compare. Though asthetically, I prefer Dallas as it is more urban and hip, Houston is an oil and international powerhouse with a large international community.

Also, the Pakistani-born population in Houston is said to be much larger than that of Dallas.

Well, I am not too surprised to see this being announced. Afterall it had been rumoured for almost 2 years now, along with QR, EK, AI. However until I actually see the tail of a PIA 777 sitting at "D" , I remain a little skeptical. After the promised SQ Cargo flights (official announcements were made) they head north to DFW at the last minute, Iberia in the late 80s/early 90s, ect..... well whats that old saying "once burned, twice shy....?" Still this is good news for Houston.

Houston indeed has the 2nd largest sub-continent population in the US and the largest West African community in the US according to reports that I have read. So, were not just a bunch of dumbass "rednecks" anymore  Smokin cool contrary what many Dallasites may tell ya  Wink/being sarcastic.

EK send a lot to pax to IAH via LGW on CO with whom they codeshare on to EWR and IAH.

If EK go to IAH I hope its not nonstop as then its too long a flight. Maybe via a West African country or Euro city would be better.

Off subject... but I'm often curious as to whether AF will eventually try such a feat.

CDG-DKR-MIA seems like a route that could be quite lucrative, for more reasons than one.

Actually AF flying from CDG-Africa-US doesn't make make a lot of sense for people flying from France to the US. These flights use the great circle route and Africa would be a big detour and add a lot of time to the flight. However, I know that CDG-DKR is a very popular flight and if they have 5th freedom rights between Senegal and the US it could work.

Air France could probably rake in the cash with a flight between Dakar and Miami, but I doubt it would ever happen. Air France does fly between Miami and Port-Au-Prince, Haiti, though. Though any hypothetical AF flights between the US and Dakar would not be to serve the CDG-US market. It would be there to serve the DKR-US market.

Houston's West African population is significant, but as large as Washington, D.C. and New York City, among others. However, Houston could easily support Africa service (and Trans Atlantic Airways starts scheduled Houston-Africa service this December routed IAH-BJL-LOS-PHC on Fridays), however, because business ties are very, very strong. Same case for Miami, a market that is waiting very anxiously for service to Africa (Kenyan Airways does intend to make MIA thier first desitination in North America, though KLM is very against them flying to the US).

Universal Airlines Guyana has shown a lot of interest in starting Africa service from GEO to ACC and DKR to connect with thier FLL and JFK flights.

Expect IAH to get PIAs new B 772ER...they have announced that MADRID too is starting next summer alongside Almaty-Glasgow and Houston so dont be surprised if we see a twice weekly route :

ISB/LHE-KHI-MAD-IAH

OR what I would prefer is : twice weekly

KHI-DXB-MAD-IAH...in that way PIA can get also the Arab traffic to the Middle East plus there is huge potential for 5th freedom flights between DXB and SPAIN (esp MAD) and PIAs main aim would be Y class pax on MAD-IAH sector as it is on their MAN-JFK + BHX-ORD routes. Spain would love a direct nonstop service to Texas esp since there are lot of Latinos-Spaniards around the area.

PIA should now look into close cooperation from IAH with CO for their pax flying to PHX-LAS-LAX-SFO-DEN-SEA etc...it will help them a lot.
