I have a question that maybe someone could answer for me. Last Thursday (Nov. 13), I was flying as a revenue pax on a West Jet flight from YYC-YYZ. This was the day that it got really windy and (I think) they closed the airport down for awhile.
We were on finals for YYZ, the captain told the FA's to take their seats. As you can imagine, it was extremely bumpy (the FA's even told the PAX to stow newspapers and books, which we rarely do). We had just gotten below the clouds and kept decending. All of a sudden, the pilots increased the power to the engines and started climbing again. They leveled off just below the clouds. Then we flew out over a lake (I think it was lake Ontario) and climbed above the clouds. We flew straight like this for about 25-30 minutes then turned around, decended and landed (well, sort of "crash landed") in YYZ. Can anyone tell me what the jaunt over the lake was for? The only thing I can think of is that they diverted us, but then we turned back because YYZ reopened.
It bothers me that the captain didn't tell us what was going on, nor did he offer an explanation after landing. A lot of people were frightened enough as it was from the turbulence, it doesn't help when you add in the element of going somewhere unknown. I have to admit, even being an FA, I was a little worried.
