Can anyone tell me what year and which series of DC-8 changed over from the original 50's passenger cabin layout complete with window curtains and all the works in the passenger seats to the standard issue jet cabin look? The early 8's had Palomar seats where the gaspers (air vents), lighting and even oxygen were all built into the seats! These cabins were a mix of 60's jet age with 1950's prop touches. (curtains instead of window shades). Also, can anyone tell me their most recent flight on a DC-8 with the funky 50's passenger cabin complete with window curtains?  Smile/happy/getting dizzy

In the 1961 movie Gidget goes Hawaiian, there is a scene where they are flying ridiculously low in a United Airlines DC-8 "Mainliner." And yes, this flick was in living early 60's Cinemascope color! (LOL)

The only flights I had on DC-8s were on Pacific East Airlines from HNL to LAX and back in 1983. Going was a -63, and returning was a -61. Both had standard post-50s cabins, and were former Flying Tigers 8s. The -63 was still in FT colors.

It would have been neat to ride an 8 with the early cabins, or a -70 series with the CFM engines.

Now you're talkin'. Those pictures bring back so many great memories as both a f/a and pax. My first DC-8 trip(as an eight year-old) was EA in '66 ATL-JFK. I've flown AC, DL, EA, NA and UA in every configuration possible- from windows with curtains to the "modern" widebody interior with over-head bins. The majority was with DL as a f/a. Easy a/c to work-even when packed.

First flight I clearly remember was on a DC-8. UTA from Douala in Cameroon to Paris Le Bourget, with stops in Fort Lamy, Chad and Tripoli, Libya. That was 1969 and I was 8. I think it was a -62.

Oh yes, those DC-8 flights from IAD to ATL in the mid 70's on Delta. Now those were the days, full course meals, roomy seats, huge picture windows to sit next to and watch those noisy engines on the wings bob up and down (if there was turbulence). And I remember, even though I was a little kid, the flight crews were always polite and attentive. Now I think that the 757 was Delta's replacement for it's DC-8 fleet. Please correct me if I am wrong.

All favorable memories...what a great plane! I only flew on UA's DC-8's, mainly between PDX-ORD and PDX-DEN, but once from PDX-SFO. First class was great...they had these huge leather seats, very comfortable, and the service was terrific. If there were one plane I'd like to see come back, it would be the DC-8.

My dad was a mechanic for United in PDX (now retired) and to this day, after working on various planes for 35+ years, the DC-8 was his favorite plane to work on, hands down. He admired the fact it was a well built, well designed aircraft that was tough and durable. They don't build planes like the DC-8 anymore, folks.

We had a few DC-8 flying around Scandinavia. Had the opportunity to fly on Mette Viking, MMX-Kos, Greece on a Scanair charter, around '84. What a cool old plane it was, great ride. I have since spotted her in her Airborne livery around the US.

My first flight was on an Air Canada DC8-61 (CF-TJV) from YUL to YUL. I was a newspapaer boy for a local Montreal paper and I won that trip over the city. That was in 1968. That was only DC8 trip ever.

My first transatlantic flight ever was in an IB DC-8/52 MAD-CCS. It was 1967 and I was only 4 years old, so I barely remember the interior of that aircraft.

However, in 1971, I flew CCS-MEX in an AM DC-8/52. I remember that the air vents were all built into the seats, but don't remember curtains instead of window shades. Actually, window shades really fascinated me during that flight.

StephnUhl777, you had it right, they just don't build them like that anymore. I also would vote for the DC-8 as my favorite older plane to come back!

All my DC-8 flights were on either UA or DL...Before the CFM coversions, I loved the sound of the JT3's spooling up....wow.

Long live the DC-8!

Sometimes when I'm working on a "state-of-the-art" 757-300; attempting to push a top-heavy, 300 lb. beverage cart up an aisle 1/8th of an inch wider than the cart itself ("Excuse me!" "Sorry!" "Watch your elbows!") I think back fondly to my early years as a steward aboard the Super Sixty series DC-8...

But then I remember the sheer terror of sitting on a jumpseat in the aft galley when that extra-long mutha would, on occassion, scrape it's tail on takeoff! The skid marks left on the runway were nothing compared to those in the flight attendants' underwear! That was one helluva terrifying sensation and sound; akin to dragging a 350,000 pound muffler a few feet beneath your butt!

Up to a few years ago, there were cargo carriers in and out of IND (US Postal Hub). Have not seen any lately. I thought they were an attractive aircraft, besides, I love the noise and smoke!

I flew a few DC-8's.

Two Charters, one my first trans atlantic crossing from DTW to AGP on American Flyers, (1971) and AC from Windsor, ONT, to ACA 1972.

I also had the opportunity to fly YYZ-YYC on an AC 8.

When I was an f/a, I had the tail scraping experience in BOS, about a month after I graduated from the In-flight training Academy(as it was referred to then). I was seated in the rear galley jump-seat when I heard it and was convinced we had lost more than a muffler! And I'm glad I resisted the urge for Mexican earlier in the day! I only heard it on one occasion, but every time I was on the -61, I was on alert. I had totally forgotten about that.

I remember talking with a capt. of a DC8 after a flight from BWI to SDF. He said the airplane was is good shape except it was hard to keep the ailerons trimmed ??? He would trim it one way and the plane would slowly go out of trim, them trim it back the other way. I said write it up and we'll take a look. We opened the left main gear door and the aileron bus cable came sliding out like a 40 foot long snake. Long story short, 3 days later we had the plane ready for a test flight. No one knows how long it had been flying like that .... The DC8's will always have a place in my heart.


Next time try the old "dirty Sanchez" She'll love it !!!

My first flight ever was on a KLM DC-8 (Super 63???) from Jhb to Ams at the end of 1967 when I was 8. Great plane, great memories. When we crossed the equator everyone got a certificate -- flying was still special in those days. I was allowed on the jump seat for the night landing at Kinshasha which was truly awesome. In the morning we arrived at the then brand new Schiphol terminal. Does anybody know, was this the first airport with jet bridges? In any case, it certainly impressed me then!


Did the chicken or the egg get laid first?
