Is Royal Airlines Still Around?

I just was looking at a picture and I saw Royal airlines and I was wondering if they were still around. I also would like to know some things about them such as
What cities they flew to and if they went out of business what date did they close their doors.

The short answer is no. Royal was acquired by Canada 3000 at some point I believe either in late 2000 or early 2001. C3 went bankrupt in 2001 shortly after 9/11. In fact one of my final few flights on C3 was on an ex-Royal 757 which C3 had not gotten around to repainting. As for destinations, since they were a charter airline they went all over the place. I'm really weak on the specifics, but they did the usual runs from YYZ to YVR and out to eastern Canada as well as the Vegas and Florida runs in the states. Also the touristy spots in Mexico and the Caribbean in addition to many European spots as well. I'm sure someone on here will be able to provide better info than my half assed attempt.  Smile/happy/getting dizzy

Royal Airlines, owned by Michel Leblanc has unfortunately gone under. It merged with Canada 3000, as AvroArrow has stated. The merger was announced in January 2001 if I'm not mistaken, and the first day in which Royal operated under the Canada 3000 brand was May 1st 2001. The merged Canada 3000, which also included Canjet, went bankrupt in November 2001 (the 8th I believe).

Royal Airlines started as a charter airline in 1992 operating 727's on flights to Florida, Cuba, and typical charter flights. It later expanded with the acquisition of the L1011 for flights across the pond. The 757-200 was next in line, to replace the 727, and the L1011's were replaced with the A310's. Flights kept expanding with more Caribbean flights, Mexico, and more European charters too.

Later, Royal acquired the 737-200's to build a scheduled domestic network. Royal was flying to many domestic destinations using all 3 aircraft types in the fleet, and it offered very good service, and also Air Canada Aeroplan points. The goal was to offer discount fares but with the service and perks many customers still appreciated.

All in all, Royal was a good operation, and was known for their excellent inflight service. All flights were catered, with full meals on anything longer than the shortest hops. Alcohol was also complimentary on all flights.

If I may add my opinions though, I believe Royal went under for a variety of factors. Cash flow was an issue after expanding the domestic network. Also, Royal was never known for having the best on-time performance. Some people questioned the overall operation and frankly, an improvement was noticed after being acquired by Canada 3000. It really is a shame in my mind that the merged Canada 3000/Royal/Canjet went under, because it seemed like a good combination of strong points of the airlines in question. The operational efficiency of Canada 3000, high service standards of Royal and warm friendliness of Canjet should have been more successful. Too bad they expanded too quickly and ran out of cash.

I forgot to add that Michel Leblanc subsequently started Jetsgo Airlines, a discount airline serving domestic flights within Canada, plus a few trans-border and charter flights too. They operate the MD-83 aircraft, and currently have 11 (possibly 12) in the fleet.
