MAS To Confirm A380 Purchase

Government officials have approved Malaysia Airlines' board decision to purchase 6 new Airbus A380 aircraft. MAS is to sign the deal at the end of the year.

It's interesting to note the airlines that are purchasing this wonderful aircraft, and judging that SQ, QF, Emirates and now MH will be operators, you can bet that they will deploy them on their LHR/kangaroo route as soon as it becomes avaliable: LHR had better find some space for these huge flying machines quicksmart!
Do people think that with these bigger aircraft that SQ/MH or QF will reduce their frequencies into LHR (whihc is sort of the point of bigger aircraft) or that by then, the market would have brown enough to accomodate double or triple daily A380s?

Source? Do a search on the internet! It has been clearly mentioned that the government has approved this purchase. In fact, it allowed MH to decide whether or not they want them and how many planes they need. MH and PMB (mother company) decided they needed 6 for deliveries starting 2007.

There is already an MoU in place. Engine choice? I am guessing RR  Smile/happy/getting dizzy

LHR is definitely a route for MH and let's hope they do get the slots they want at LHR though. I don't think they would need to reduce frequency by a lot, if at all. All 18 weekly flights currently are pretty packed. By 2007 MH is hopeful for at least 3x daily flights and A380 would be put into good use by then, and would be a MUST if they don't receive more slots.

In that case, LHR would become the A380 airport of the world. 3 X A380 flights a day is alot of capacity. Add to that QF and SQ's A380s which will prob be double daily for QF and Triple daily for SQ and there'll be heaps of plane spotting at LHR!

Qantasclub, I seriously doubt that QF/MH/SQ will reduce their frequencies into LHR when they get the A380 - the reason for this particular larger aircraft is not being able to reduce frequencies, but increase capacity on those routes, where increasing the frequency is either highly difficult (Slots etc.) or plain and simply impossible (... Slots etc...  Big grin).

Not sure how it looks in the case of QF and MH, but someone - whom I think works/worked for SQ - wrote a short while ago that at least one of their two flights into LHR could easily fill an A380 year round, with the second being booked enough to fill one during about half the year...

I would expect MAS to send the A 380 to LAX which means that TPE will too get it as its a stopover on the way, SYD, LHR and NRT. I wont be surprised if MEL too gets a MAS A 380.

LHR, SYD definedtly, and also LAX. These airports have tight landing slots and it makes sense to fly a larger capacity aircraft without having to negotiate new landing slots. Melbourne, (my hometown) I'm certain will not get an MH A380 as it is an end-of-the-line station with no pressure on landing slots at all-MH can basically come and go whenever it wants. Same with SQ. Hopefully, we'll still be able to spot the A380 with QF likely to have prob at least one daily flight from here. (MELB)

The passenger capacity of the A380 is only 10 or 15% more than the 747, so no, airlines that fly 747s full all year round with multiple daily frequencies will not be cutting flights!

Qantas's 744s now have 358 seats in a 3 class configuration. The Qantas A380s ordered (from the Airbus website) will seat 524 passengers in a 3 class configuration. This represents a 46% increase in capacity, which is, indeed substantial. That's the whole point about this aircraft, and why it is so revolutionary. Otherwise, airlines would simply stick with the 747. This impressive jump in capacity will either allow airlines to lower frequencies OR, as some people in this thread have suggested, increase their capacity without having to negotiate or bid for more landing slots. Either way, it will serve congested airports well. Hence the above mentioned hubs.

With respect Cedarjet, the capacity of the A380 is 555 in a typical three-class configuration. That's significantly more than a typical three-class 744 which probably seats 300 to 350 (maybe 400 at a push). For example, many of BA's 744s are configured F14/C38/Y299 or F14/C62/Y215. They have some other minor variations, but the overall capacity is not that different.

Well with QF's 12 confirmed A380 and 13 options, that is obviously enough capacity to Run triple daily (2 from SYD, one from MEL) into both LHR and LAX (the two busiest routes that QF serve and regularly are at 80%+ capacity year round and always 100% around JUNE to AUG and DEC to JAN)

So I could not see QF reducing their schedule any time soon.

RE: MH and SQ it is a similar situation ( SQ already just out of sydney operate daily 2 x 747 and 1 to 2 777 and MH are already 1 x 747 and 1 x 777 daily)
