SAS CEO sees Star Alliance joint jet decision soon
The Chief Executive of Scandinavian airline SAS said on Thursday he expected four members of the Star Alliance to decide within weeks on what type of regional jet they would buy together to save costs.
"We are close to an agreement," Jorgen Lindegaard told Reuters, referring to the plan by SAS, German Lufthansa, Air Canada and Austrian Airlines jointly to pick an aircraft mainly for short-haul business flights.

"The decision hasn't been finalised yet," Lindegaard said, speaking on the sidelines of a SAS strategy briefing. "We have a Star Alliance meeting in Japan in early December....maybe then."

Each of the carriers would decide independently how many of the new planes, each seating 70-120 passengers, to buy and when.

"For us (SAS), the regional jets are planned to go into operation in 2006," Lindegaard said.

Last month, Austrian's CEO Vagn Soerensen said the contract could be split between two manufacturers. All four of the world's leading plane makers -- Boeing, Airbus, Bombardier Inc and Embraer SA -- are vying for a deal potentially worth more than $9 billion.
End

Do you think their final decision will be official in Japan?

Interesting. Last I heard, Air Canada was going to make their decision before the other Star members. Air Canada in December sometime, while the others in January. This will definitely be major news.
