24 Years Ago Today - Air New Zealand TE901 Crash
User currently offlineVirginFlyer From New Zealand, joined Sep 2000, 4579 posts, RR: 37
Posted (12 years 6 days 5 hours ago) and read 18208 times:

On the 28th of November 1979, Air New Zealand's DC-10 ZK-NZP, carrying 257 passengers and crew, departed on TE901, a sightseeing flight to the Antarctic. 24 years ago from the time I am posting this, the aircraft was over the Antarctic ice, and less than half an hour away from tragedy, when it crashed into Mt Erebus shortly before 1pm NZDT. It was not until that evening that it became apparent that something had gone terribly wrong, as the aircraft failed to make contact with anyone, and as the time that the fuel would have been exhausted passed, it was acknowledged by CEO Morrie Davis that the aircraft had indeed crashed.

To this day, controversy remains over the exact cause of the accident, and who was to blame. Pilot error was the cause determined by an accident investigation, however a Royal Commission of Inquiry under Justice Peter Mahon apportioned blame squarly with the airline and its practices. The Mahon Report was later overruled by the Privvy Council, not on the merit of what had been found, but because the Commission went beyond its terms of reference. It is unlikely there will ever be any reconciling of the two different theories over the accident.

However, this post is not about beating out the same old arguments, but rather pausing and thinking of those who lost their lives in what was at the time the 4th worst air accident in history, and the second major one of 1979 involving the DC-10. To this date it remains the worst transportation accident in terms of loss of life in New Zealand's history (and only one fatality less than the 1931 Napier Earthquake, New Zealand's worst tragedy), with the almost everyone in the country of around 3 million people at the time having some connection to someone among the 237 passengers and 20 crew. The accident left a terrible scar on New Zealand's national consciousness, one that remains today and will still take some time to heal.

The nationality breakdown of those on board were:

200 New Zealanders
24 Japanese
22 Americans
6 British
2 Canadians
1 Australian
1 French
1 Swiss

We will remember them.

Air New Zealand should go back to doing Antarctic sight seeing flights again. They should be commercially viable now and would let Air New Zealand move on from this tragedy and prove not only that they have learnt from it but I think it would contribute to healing any lingering scars.

Is there any kind of memorial in Antarctica to mark the crash site? I would have thought a plaque or something like that would be in order.

There is a memorial cross, I believe overlooking Scott Base. I can't find any pictures online, however I have one in a book here.

There is also a memorial garden to the crew, which was opened 4 years ago, at Auckland International Airport

You're missing the point. The plaque commemorates the site of the crash. It doesn't matter how many people are going to see it. No different to placing American flags on the moon. Who's going to see those?
Like VirginFlyer said, there's the memorial at Auckland Airport and the mass grave in West Auckland as well.

Man looking at all those names really brings home the reality of this crash. It's different when you hear 200+ people died in this crash- that's just a figure. But when you read each individual name it just seems like a lot more people for some reason.

Thanks for that manifest - my father knew Mr Stewart personally (he was a lawyer taking a day out of the office), while my mother had once been introdced to Mrs Morrison, through a mutual friend.

One of the most heroic air rescue (if I may call it that) also involved an Air New Zealand DC10 and its crew who on December 21, 1978 managed to track, locate and guide a lost pilot in a Cessna 188 over the vast Pacific Ocean to a safe landing with just vapours left in his tank. For their efforts which went beyond the call of duty the crew were thus acclaimed:

Captain Gordon Vette and F/O Malcolm Forsyth received the Johnstone Memorial Trophy 1980 from the Guild of Airline Pilots and Navigators
F/E Gordon Brooks and off duty F/E Arthur Dovey who was also on board received commendation certificates from McDonnell Douglas for displaying "the highest standards of compassion, judgement and airmanship".

Gordon Brooks was the FE on the ill fated ZK-NZP when she was lost on November 28, 1979 less than a year later.

Capt. Vette went on to write a book titled 'Impact Erebus' on the accident.

Yes, all of them are remembered and we pray for them.

Wow Vimanav, I'd like to hear more about that story.

You may try the following weblink:

The name of the movie (made for TV) is 'Mercy Mission: The Rescue of Flight 771'

A great read is 'Emergency - Crisis on the Flight Deck' by Stanley Stewart which has, besides this incident in great detail, some more absolutely amazing stories which are true to the title of the book.

They used to show a film about the crash, or rather the investigation and controversy around it, I cannot remender what it was called, only that it was so long it was shown over two days, each segment being as long as the average film, actor Frank Finlay played Peter Mahon.

Yes, that was a good dramatisation. I am always on the look out for it so I can tape it.

Incidentally I have a copy of the accident report & the Mahon report
