Yes, you did read the title correctly!

SAA's B747-344, ZS-SAT, which was withdrawn from the active fleet about a month or so ago, did a test flight after maintenence yesterday (Thur). On the return, the aircraft did two Touch and Go's on Rand Airport's 1712m x 15m Runway 11, to "test the envelope" so to speak for when the museum aircraft, ZS-SAN, is delivered there in Dec/Jan. Apparently the touch and go's were totally awesome to see!

ZS-SAT is now in an all white colour scheme, so hopefully that means it will be sold and/or flown elsewhere and not cut up like three previous B747's that were taken out of the fleet.

Is Rand Airport in Gauteng Province? If so, then it's also a "high and dry" airport.

Is ZS-SAN still in full SAA colours, if so it will look great on display .

It reminds me of seeing QF-747-200 "City of Bunbury" on permenant display at Longreach which landed on the runway back in Nov 2002 which is little over a 1km in length!!! - only one attempt needed.

Yes, ZS-SAN is in full SAA colours.

Forgot to mention that Rand airport is 5483FT AMSL. The temp on Thur was about 26deg C, making the density altitude close to 8000FT!
