1940 - First flight of Boeing Stratoliner, this first airliner with a pressurized cabin allowed the plane to fly up to 20,000 ft. avoiding turbulence
1947 - Flight faster than sound, the Bell X-I
1951 - The introduction of Tourist/Economy/Coach/Y Class
1954 - First Boeing 707, also the first jet airliner succesfully enters the pax service
1957 - World's first satellite, Russian Sputnik I
1958 - More than a million flew over the atlantic, surpass the total of Atlantic Steamship pax
1961 - FIRST MAN IN SPACE. Yuri Gagrin, orbited on Vostok I spacecraft
1969 - First concorde's flight

2001 - MH B772 is the first twin engine commercial aircraft to fly over North Pole
2001 - MH is the first Asian carrier to fly over polar route
2003 - Concorde makes it final flight on 24 October 2003

Amazing facts indeed,so much has been done in the last 100 years.
The presentation of Discovery(middle east) airs on Dec 8th,that's a week earlier than Asia&Pacific region.It's gonna be a week long presentation with 2hrs of programs everyday!Awesome!

Impressive list.
However, for me 2 important dates are missing:

Sep 23, 1913: First flight between Europe and Africa, across Mediterrannean sea, by Roland GARROS (before giving his name to the French tennis open, he was an aviation pionneer....)

May 12, 1930 : First commercial service (postal) accross South Atlantic, by Jean MERMOZ , for L'Aeropostale

I guess the point of this thread is upbeat milestones.

But here are a couple of bad ones:
- Worst air crash in history in 1977 when two 747s collide in Tenerife.
- Worst single aircraft crash in history in 1985 when JAL 747 crashes into mountain in Japan.

I don't know the death tolls off the top of my head or the exact dates, but these are tragedies that also show we have a long way to go in terms of perfect safety.
