Looks as though HP is oging to do more hub bypass operations & hit the point to point market, presumably causing B6 more headaches, as this article points out.

America West sees growth in new routes
Mike Sunnucks
Phoenix
America West Airlines plans to grow 10 percent next year, mostly by adding flights that do not use its hubs in Phoenix and Las Vegas.

Airline executives Thursday said they expect 60 percent of next year's growth will come from new low-fare point-to-point service and hope to fly to the West Coast from Washington, D.C. America West is already flying new nonstop transcontinental service to Los Angeles from New York and Boston, and will fly from both of those cities to San Francisco soon.

Hawaiian Airlines, a codeshare partner of America West, currently interchanges passengers with the mainland discount carrier at Phoenix and Las Vegas, but also flies to Hawaii from both Los Angeles and San Francisco. This means vacationers bound for Hawaii from key U.S. East population centers could make the journey in two hopes, one of them on a cut-rate carrier.

"We think we have lots of opportunities," America West VP Scott Kirby said Thursday.

America West continues to lobby for more flight slot availability at National and New York's Laguardia airports. Congress has approved more West Coast flights at Washington Reagan National and America West has applied for those spaces.

Guess I saw this one coming. America West has done a nice job of transforming itself recently, and if the seemingly profitable trend is point-to-point, I guess they'll do it too. By the way, does anyone know their market share at CMH now that they've ditched the hub?

Well increased competition is good for everyone. Maybe they are doing it to avoid, I don't know the biggest competition they have in PHX and LAS, say Southwest! B6 does not even fly to DCA or LGA, and no service to LAX or SFO, yes I know LGB and OAK. I think WN is more of a threat than B6.

Also reading the article please point out where it says anything about them taking on B6?

I would say that if they are going to concentrate point to point out of SFO and LAX these routes could be feasible:
SFO/LAX-STL
SFO/LAX-PDX
SFO/LAX-DFW
SFO/LAX-DCA
SFO/LAX-BDL
SFO-SAN
SFO/LAX-MSP
SFO/LAX-DTW

i just heard that soon we should watch for new west coast flights into dfw since they are happy with the lax runs to the east, they want to try to build up more O&D out of LAX.

Expect an aircraft order from America West soon. They plan on going into more and more longhaul point to point flying. All of the Locos have been trying to grab this market as that is where the majors make a lot of money.
