Hi again Unique!
Thanks for your information! Now I need another question, this time it's an hard one!!! Maybe you can help me. I'll fly from LAX on the 15th. December in LX041, do you have by any chance the possibility to know in advance what plane will fly that day? ( I know I'm pushing too much on this but maybe you're a "gifted" person and you have access to this information.... )
If not that's ok!!! We still be friends!!!
Regards

Yes, it was definitely HB-JMC... Quite a few of my friends and I watched her depart from ZRH's RWY 16 that day, with a strong crosswind tackling her while she climbed out.... We were actually guessing how long her takeoff-roll would be, but we were a little surprised to see her raise her nose fairly early

Yep..and I was on the receiving end as she arrived into LAX in some rather crappy weather. A great site to see. However, I will miss the MD11s too. How many ships have been delivered to LX so far?

BN747, HB-JMD has been delivered this evening. A total of 6 A340's are here now of which 5 are in service (HB-JMA, B, C, E, F).
CV990, this info is not yet available. There is a long term plan but the aircraft rotations are subject to changes hence you cannot really tell today which aircraft you will fly.

Hey Unique, thanks a lot anyway!
Yes I'm looking forward to fly in this brand new airliner, we are on rows 24 and 25 A/B. Because I flew from ZRH to LAX in SWISS MD11 HB-IWM "Liskaam" I wouldn't mind to return on HB-JMF "Liskaam" too, that would be neat! We'll see next week, I'll do a trip report afterwards! How is the weather in Kloten in these next few day? Any chance to see some snow on arrival?

Hi guys!!!
Great to see HB-JMD arriving at Kloten tonight! It's a pitty that it will stay only until the 12th. December when SWISS will stop flying, so they'll not even start the HKG service!!! (*)

Unique, I saw HB-JMA (probably just departed) LAX today. I don't know what to make of these LX rumors about an imminent shutdown..I hope it doesn't happen..I'd hate to see Swiss go. Any idea which ships are slated to visit LAX tomorrow, wed til whenever?
Thanks in advance,

Hi BN747!
Don't worry about those rumours! If you look closely in this forum once a while people come out with another information about SWISS, it's been all year around so I just give up of saying something, now normally I'll play a bit with that!
Thanks for your information about the latest SWISS 343, HB-JMA! By the way did you like it? Must be quite an event seeing a 343, I don't know how many airlines operate the 343 in LAX, LH, Air Tahiti, Lan Chile, others?

Hi CV990
The A340s are common here not as much as JFK...we could use a few more but LAX is 747 dominated airport (which I must admit..I like very much!). But I also like seeing the A340s and Air Tahiti can easily have 2 on the ground at once sometimes 3 in a day. You're right, LH,Air Tahiti, Lan Chile are here with A340s. Also Philippine Airlines and now Swiss. Also A340-600s are here with Cathay Pacific and China Eastern. This month Singapore Airlines wil ferry the delivery of it's 1st A340-500 through here. Hmmm..having said all that..I guess we do have a reasonable amount of A340 service.

Hi BN747.
Good to know that! Actually I like very much LAX. I only have been there once in the summer of 1998 spotting airplanes and when I left LAX to JFK on a redeye flight also in that summer late at night. It was a UA flight, a 767-200 and the reg. was N601UA, looks like a very common visitor to this airport. But because we arrived quite early from FAT in a Skywest EMB-120 Brazilia I had a few hours to see some movement, and it was stricking!!!! Buzzy, very buzzy. I remember seeing an Alitalia MD11 and many other things that I already forgot. Next monday I'll be there to fly with SWISS to ZRH and hopefully I'll get there quite early, this time I can't fly from FAT ( terrible expensive ) so we'll drive from FAT to LAX, leaving at 8:00 am and be there at 12:00 am, then we'll check-in and I hope to have at least1 or 2 hours to see some good plans. Now a question, mondays at LAX are good? We're boarding at Tom Bradley Terminal, is that a nice place to spot and take some good shots? Only you guy can help on that, so I wait your feedback!
best regards

Mondays are decent..when you get there about 1030-1100AM All the Asian and South Pacific carriers will be arriving and NWA 1 a 744 will be departing. QF 4 744s,NZ 2-744s,SQ,JL 2-3 744s, TG,KE,MH,BR and CI 744s too. As the last 4 arrive so will the Swiss A340, Air Tahiti's A340(s) should be on the ground or arriving. China Eastern's A346 will arrive as well.Unfortunately the illustrious Air Pacific 744 won't make an appearance that day. Korean's 777 will be about to leave. HMY's 757 will be arriving as well. While you are waiting to enter the departure lounge LH 744 and A340 will arrive as will BA, KLM and EI. In this span also 3 UA 744s will have arrive as will as 3 AA 777s and a number of UA 777s.
Bets place to watch after check-in. If the weather is good..go back outside and go to the top of the parking garage to your left near T3 (Alaska). The one on the right or near T4 (AA) has a heliport on top and is inaccessible. The cops on bikes/foot or car may appear. But just explain you are a plane enthusiast/photog plus you are travelling...and that's if they approach you. They've developed a discering eye for 'spotters' these days. The view from there is spectacular! Overlooking the northside of the field..you turn to your left and still see action on the southside. Lately Swiss has been parking on the north so you very well may be able to photograph your ship as she arrives and is towed onto your gate. Don't go into the departure lounge secured area until you absolutely have to...once in you cannot come out..well it's discouraged. Go in about an hour before departure..you'll be fine.
If the weather sucks (rain), above the ticketing area is the Food Court. There are gigantic paned windows at both extreme ends where you can see the line ups at the Intl terminal on one side or the other. There is also a viewing area in the very center on the same level. No gates here..but this is the 50 yardline where aircraft landing on the southside but gate on the north...pass right in front of you to get there. Also some planes landing on the north side but gate south may (but don't have to) use this route (they have the luxury of making that transition far down field if directed by the tower).
Sounds like you have a great trip ahead of you! I look forward to hearing how your LX A340 experience goes! Happy Contrails!!!

Hey BN747!
You really know about LAX, that information is awsome and I really appreciate all that you said. So to my best acknowledgement when I check in the baggage I shouldn't get in right away, right? I'll do that, I will have some spare time and because it's gonna be a long flight we probably will spend some time eating and maybe shopping around.
Thanks a lot and maybe you'll take a picture of our 343 leaving LAX that afternoon!!!
Regards

You're welcome. Base your decision on whether to spot aircraft on upon checking in. If you arrive at 12pm and there's a mob in the Bradley Terminal..it could be 1pm by the time they get to you. At that point..you'd have about 30 minutes to go across the street and up the stairs to watch..a lot goes on in the 30 mins. At about 2pm (flt leaving at 3pm) Security shouldn't be that bad ..esp if your LX A340 is the north pier Gates 120,121 or 122. It's most likely to be one of those gates. If you're upstairs inside or out....you'll see it.
And if it's a registration I need....I will be out to get your jet!
So far I only have HB-JMC and HB-JMA. There is no flight today...but they return tomorrow (until next Mon) and I'll back to on LX watch when I can get out there.

Hi BN747!
Well as you know HB-JMC is back again to LAX, I sincerely hope you can get others in the next few days....they're just starting right? That homepage that UNIQUE gave is fantastic isn't it? You can check there a few hours ahead and you can decide if you'll get the SWISS 343 or not, that awsome!
I have a feling that I'll fly in HB-JMF, well just a feeling, sometimes the "feeling" is not right, but!?
Have a great week and good photos!

Are any one of you guys the person I saw yesterday heading toward Pershing with a camera? If so, did the El Al police hassle you (there were 2 British spotters there as well)?

Apparently today's LX9 (ORD-ZRH) was changed to an A343 instead of the usual MD11.. does anyone have any idea why? JME was used for this flight.
Thanks!
