These recent Top 5 threads have been interesting-why not do a Top 5 Best Aircraft? Of course this has probably been done before, but there is always room for a fresh perspective. The criteria for inclusion here should be in terms of sales, passenger comfort, quality of design, performance and reliability.
For my own entry, I would have to say that these 5 aircraft have stood the test of time and become aviation legends:
1. The Douglas DC-3
2. The Boeing 747
3. The Boeing 707
4. The Boeing 737
5. The Lockheed L1049 Constellation

It is my belief that members who do not like a specific thread should refrain from posting in it. The other two Top 5 topics have contributed quite a bit to the forum without starting any flamage-I fail to see how this thread is any different. It's highly unlikely given the nature of the thread that there is anything here that could incite, for instance, an A vs. B flamewar.

What's wrong with posting for fun anyway? I pay my $5 a month so I'll reply to or start any posts I damn well want to as long as they conform to the rules I agreed to when I signed up.
Back to the topic, here are my opinions(mainly from a historical perspective):
1. Boeing 707 for being the first successful jet airliner and maybe even for accelerating globalization (for better or worse)
2. Douglas DC3 for its huge role in ushering in the era of air travel
3. Boeing 747 for being the first jumbo and creating a mass market for air travel
4. Concorde for being the only supersonic airliner with any service life and possibly for being the first of many supersonic airliners?????????
5. (dont torch me too hard for this one) Airbus A300 for being the first wide-bodied twin and launching Airbus

Aircraft which are robust, and built with a good combination of passenger comfort and amenities, durability and technology. Basically like with just about anything else on the market, technology is always improving, but cost cutting and corner cutting is ever-increasing with bean counters running companies instead of technical engineering departments. The era from late 1960s to late 1980s brought us the aircraft which have all the conveniences we expect today, in a package which was built to be the best, not to undercut competitors.
Of course in today's business all that matters is cheap planes, low fuel burn, low air fares. But the question was which A/C do I consider best and why.

Concorde - For breaking boundaries nobody was willing to cross
DC-8, L-1011 - for toughing it out and thriving as the
no. 2 guys
727, DC-9 - Workhorses of the fleets
A380, 7E7 - For providing the industry with a future

Flying Boats (sparked up trans oceanic flying)
DC-3 (it did its part)
Viscount (first turboprop)
Comet (first full Jetliner)
B707 (first successful jetliner by Boeing)
DC-8 (helped increase international travel even more)
B727 (brought jet service to more everyday people)
B737 ("Simply the Best.")
B747 (first widebody, first 2 decker jetliner, set new standards, brought mass transit, most reconiseable)
B777 (so much new technology, safetly and efficiency advancements)
A300 (first widebody twin, start of one of the few companys capable of taking on Boeing)
A320 (FBW technology)
A345 (first ultra long ranger seen in a while)

1. P-51 Mustang/B-17 Flying Fortress(the two planes that turned the tide in the European theatre of WWII). Also, B-29 and Corsair for the Pacific theatre.
2. Fokker triplane (the first successful fighter aircraft?)
3. MIG15(one of the best military aircraft ever, it gave the allies hell in Korea. Was selling the engine to MIG the first of RR's many blunders?)
4. The stealths: F117/B2
5. F14 Tomcat w/Phoenix missiles. It was already a dumb idea to f**ck with the US in the air but after this it was completely pointless.

Here is my list. Mostly based on milestones in Aviation.
#1 Wright Flyer ( if it wasnt for this bird this website wouldnt exist)
#2 DC-3 ( Began commercial passenger operations as we know it, some of which still fly commercial operations today)
#3 Bell X1 ( piloted by chuck yeager first official aircraft to break sound barrier)
#4 Boeing 737 (The 2nd most succesful family of aircraft apart from the DC-3)
#5 Learjet business jets. People see anything without an Airline logo on it with Jet Engines it is immediately a learjet. I guess that speaks for itself.
