Starting 16th Dec, PK will operate a weekly A310-300 service routed Karachi-Islamabad-Tashkent-Almaty bringing the central Asian region back in its network. Both destinations were dropped in 2000/01 respectively, earlier both were served with seperate flights twice weekly each via ISB as well.

Why PIA does not uses their Boeing 737-300s instead? Both cities are in range of this aircraft and they could either offer a more frequent service or fly to each city separately if using a smaller plane...

They did that in the early 90's when the countries were newly indpendant, perhaps it did'nt work, hordes of people would fly into KHI from these countries and others on IL86 and Tu154 so Tashkent, Almaty and Baku were upgraded to the A310, Ashkabad remained a 737 some flights to Baku were also 737 via Tehran till 97. You should have seen the unbelieveable amount of cargo these people used to carry it was nothing like you have ever seen, I dont know how the planes accomodate so much.

Honestly, I don't understand these once-a-week routings. Are they even money makers? And what an odd routing, too.

They're also resuming service to Bangladesh, Nepal and Sri Lanka from January each capital will be served twice weekly.

As for their livery I suspect they're going for the old SAS style, the Green belly is gone but the three Green and Blue slahes remmain, atleast thats what their service vehicles are sporting and usually thats what ends up on the aircraft as well.

When will the eastern routes be reopened?? Will they be the same ones over India? If yes then has there been a deal recently?? I have been out of touch for a while now.
For those unaware of the background, India banned all Pakistani aircrafts to fly over its territories for I don't know what reason. Pakistans reaction was the same. I am sure it effected India more than Pakistan because of Pakistan's geographical shape so I think that did made them think about it. But in this part of the world, tensions grown much easily then they go the other way.

The latest is that overflight ban has been dropped by Pakistan and it was dropped last year by India, PIA can now operate more flights there with 747s as the restriction on aircraft of 200 seats only has been dropped by India, they' re planning 12 weekly services, also allowed private airlines from both countries to fly across the border and PIA are seeking to add Chennai too while Indian Airlines can also fly to a third Pakistani city of their choice.

Do IC plan to re launch service to Lahore which was suspended in the 80's?

BTW Bravo45 when did you leave for the states?

When I was in DEL and one of the flights from the Central Asian Republics came in Bishkek/Almaty or something (it was an IC codeshare). Half of the pax who came out were clearly smuggling stuff, and teh other half CLEARLY looked like whores who had come down on business.

Perhaps there is a market in pakistan as well?  Laugh out loud

IC to LHE? Unlikely. AFAIK, the current plan according to my source in the airline is to operate twice weekly on BOM- KHI using A320 eqpt.

What about PK's lans for India? I guess it will be daily on BOM-KHI using a mix of A310/A300 eqpt and 3x KHI-LHE-DEL using B737's? Any chance of seeing routings to HYD or LKO, cities with significant number of people with links in Paksitan?

Today's Times of India reported that PK will start operating 6/7 to DEL and BOM effective JAN. They plan to increase frequencies to 12/7 by MAR04.

Roy,
If things go incredibly well at the SAARC conference, then I feel this could happen. What should really be interesting is the potential for tourism between the two countries.

I think quite a few Pakistanis would like to visit Goa for beach holidays. I presume it would be cheaper than the Maldives, Sri Lanka etc. Then there are places like Rajistan

My other half is from India and she has visited Pakistan many times. I on the other hand am having trouble getting a bloody visa for India.

You mean BETTER half Big thumbs up

But seriously yes. I have visited Pakistan a number of times and I feel there is so much we can share and learn from each other besides so much of history which we can share.

And if we choose to develop it further... just think of the cricket charters that we could operate between the two countries whenever one plays the other. We could probably fill out a couple of A380s during the cricket season Smile/happy/getting dizzy

Viamnav,
Yep you are right. Half the problems exist through misunderstandings and the machinations of politicians on both sides.

Which places did you visit in Pakistan? Harappa and Moenjodaro are quiet magnificent. The NWFP has some phenomenal Buddhist monasteries / stupas which have tragically been neglected.

And Lahore of course. The Sikhs have a saying:

'Jinnay Lahore nahin vaikhai, onay kuch nahin vaikhaya!!'

I personally would like to visit the birth places of my parents, Hoshiarpur and Rohtak

My visits were to LHE, KHI, ISB and PEW. Personally I like LHE a lot. Especially the "Village Restaurant" - a personal favourite. ISB is an extremely beautiful capital city and KHI - so similar to BOM. I look forward to my next trip there in early 2004.

IC to LHE? Unlikely.
I would also assume so. Is it because people just might not be willing to pay airfare just to go a couple of miles from Amratsar, when the bus service is available? Smile Just kiddin but the availability of motorway between ISB and LHE did resulted in a huge decrease in pax traffic choosing to go by air.
I am sure there are a lot of people willing to go to and from Lahore to India.

Well I think we moved to the States back in April. So much has been going on ever since, time seemed to just have flown away so quickly. I have also started taking flight lessons on irregular basis(I know thats bad but things are falling into place slowly).

'Jinnay Lahore nahin vaikhai, onay kuch nahin vaikhaya!!'
An attempted translation (attempted because the original language punjabi hold so much more weight to it), "The person who haven't seen Lahore hasn't seen anything." I think that the original saying was, "Who haven't seen Lahore haven't taken birth." But anyway there can be so many versions of it.

Especially the "Village Restaurant....
Man you made my mouth watery, I used to live in Defence if you know that, about 10-15 minutes drive from that road, MM Aalam road, the road full of so many great restaurants, and it was so often that with friends we used to slip in to one of those. I really miss the great food back home.

Which consular post are you applying through? If it would help you to get a business sponsor, my company (of which I'm a director) can issue you an "invitation letter". Drop me an email if interested.
