CALGARY, ALBERTA--WestJet today announced that in response to the
current ferry strike they will offer flight service on a temporary basis
on Friday, December 12 between Vancouver and Victoria. The fare is just
$49 one-way, plus applicable fees and taxes, excluding the fuel
surcharge, for each seat.

Siobhan Vinish, WestJet's Director, Public Relations and Communications,
commented today: "We want to provide assistance to the affected
communities by offering flights between Vancouver and Victoria for $49
each way, plus taxes and fees. Based on the short flight distance
WestJet has opted not to charge the fuel surcharge on this route. We
hope our Friday flights between Vancouver and Victoria will allow
residents of the two cities to return home for the weekend or continue
with holiday plans."

The route will be operated with state of the art Boeing 737-700 jets
with 136 seat capacity.

WestJet's schedule for Friday, December 12 is as follows:

Victoria to Vancouver Vancouver to Victoria
Flight Depart Arrive Flight Depart Arrive
Flight 1101 8:30am 9:00am Flight 1102 9:30am 10:00am
Flight 1103 10:25am 10:55am Flight 1104 11:25am 11:55am
Flight 1105 12:20pm 12:50pm

WestJet will continue to monitor the situation to determine if
additional flights are necessary.

Guests can book their flight through the airline's Sales Super Centre at
1-800-538-5696, or by calling their local travel agent.

Good PR move by Westjet, good job!

Pardon my ignorance, but how much does the ferry usually cost between Vancouver & Victoria? I know it's not a direct service (Tsawassen to ?), so does this work out to a good deal when you factor in the fuel/time to get to the ferry terminal from the respective cities?

I don't know if you've been following the story or not, but BC Ferries has shut down service. So basically, you either get to Victoria/Vancouver on an airline or you don't get there at all! I believe that to travel as a passenger with no vehicle, the ferry costs $10 each way, with a vehicle its $30+ each way.

Click on this link if you'd like to read up on why the ferry workers have halted service and are on strike.

*In a related note, shares of Helijet have soared 1000%*

While not true, many of the small airlines should benefit greatly from the BC Ferries debacle. Extra flight frequencies will probably be offered by other airlines. Also, if the problem continues, I wonder if we'll see YVR-Naniamo and Sunshine Coast service. A occurrence like this highlights how flexible Westjet operations are to react to various situations - good for them.

Head steward $24.68;

Not true......... There are other ways to get to the Island, I own a trucking company and have re-routed my trucks to go to Mt Vernon in Washington to catch the anacortes-Sidney ferry. The distance is the same as tsawwassen to abbotsford as it is to Mt Vernon. There is also ferry service in port Angeles directly into downtown Victoria (although I haven't personally used THIS one yet!) But It so happens that I am making a killing with transporting goods over to the Island, So really this ferry strike has been good to me  Big grin

Best regards,
