What do you think are the 3 most important things about elite status?

1) Elite check in/ security (no long lines)
2) Upgrades
3) Mileage bonus

I don't care as much about pre-boarding, free drinks, and priority meal choice.

I do care about pre-boarding. Being a bulkhead fan, I need to make sure there is overhead bin space if I'm not upgraded. I do agree that the free drinks and meal is a nice 'perk', but it is not that important compared to the rest. And while mileage bonuses are nice, the 'flying experience' is what I am more interested in - check in/security, boarding and upgrades.

#1 preferential treatment during Cancellations. This has happened twice to me, and this is what it is all about. NW made sure I was happy because they know I am a very, very good customer
#2. Security Lines at Hub Airports
#3. Dedicated Reservation lines
#4. 125% mileage Bonus at Platinum Elite
#5. Not being charged penalties to redeposit miles.
#6. Pre Boarding
#7. Upgrades (It really is never an issue, I pay full fare anyway)

Avt007,

What lounges are you talking about? Lounge accessibility has nothing to do with elite status, or am I missing something?

DTWclipper:

Depending on which alliance you have status with, and your country of residence, you may have lounge access based on status.

Example, if you have Star Alliance Gold Status, you get lounge access when flying internationally, no matter what class of service you are in. If you live in certain countries, you get lounge access whether domestic or international.

Also regarding lounges: some airlines, such as American, give discounts to elites who sign up for lounge membership.

What I like about my AAdvantage Platinum status:
1) 100% mileage bonus and upgrade points--->easier to upgrade.
2) Elite check-in
3) Preboarding

At BA, lounges cannot be accessed with a day/year pass. The only way to get in is to be flying in Club (Business Class) or First class, or be a Silv, Gold, or Prem MBR.
(or OneWorld equivalent)

If your a Silv MBR (OneWorld sapphire) you have access to: The Executive Club Lounges, The Club Europe/Club World Lounges, The Terraces Lounges, and the Molton Brown Travel Spa.

Gold MBR (OneWorld Emerald): All above plus the First Lounges.

Prem MBR: All above plus Concorde Room.

If you are a Gold, Club, or First PAX, then you also have access to the Arrivals Lounges at LHR, LGW, and JNB.

If you are a First PAX, you also have access to the Concorde Room.

In no particular order...

1. Upgrades
2. Mileage bonus
3. Preferential treatment on standby lists and rebookings
