Vertical Separation

Since reducing the vertical separation between two planes over Europe, the number of planes you see flying by at any given time is almost doubled.

Is this due to more economic flight-routes or just more flights (think of the
budget-airlines)

I don't know how you've arrived at that conclusion.

Introduction of reduced vertical separation minima over Europe hasn't increased the traffic. It's simply given air traffic controllers greater flexibility in managing traffic by providing additional flight levels to assign to aircraft.
