Commutair Out Of CLE?

Not sure if anyone has noticed yet, but all cities that CommutAir flies to from CLE will be slashed to only 2 daily flights each. Have loads been extremely week system wide or is there anothe reason? I know in TOL they have struggled to fill even half of the 19 seaters. It seems people just don't want to fly to CLE to connect when they have a choice of 9 daily jets to CVG or multiple jet flights to other cities.

Personally I've always worried about the success of such service. I've felt Commutair would be better off running a similar operation to the Northeast network providing routes such as CAK/TOL/DAY-CMH and other commuter routes that would be attractive to business people. As far as Continental service goes, they would probably be better off working out a couple jet flights to the EWR hub providing the only New York area service any of these cities would have.

My mom's friend lives in Toledo and takes the Commutair thru CLE to get to EWR every couple of weeks. Last Monday morning he flew EWR-CLE-TOL and was the only passenger on the flight from CLE-TOL. I personally do feel that TOL would be better served with a few jets from EWR.

Jeeze, I found out about my schedule change via airliners.net instead of Crapinental -- great work, Crapinental!!  Yeah sure

Looks like some cities retained all four flights on select days, others two-three depending on the day...

I can't see how any operator of B1900s can survive with the advent of regional jets. Those things are cramped, inconvenient, and while they are safe, I would bet most of the flying public doesn't trust them to be safe. I think its days are numbered, except in the smallest of markets.

Think the B1900s are small? Cape Air flies 9-passenger Cessna's as Continental Connection service between Tampa and Daytona Beach, Ft. Myers, and Sarasota, and between Miami and Naples.

I'd take the 9-passenger Cessna over a B1900. Those two crashes this year would make me a little apprehensive to take a flight in one.

We (XJ) work ground for them in TOL, and we have not heard anything. When will this slashed flight shcedule happen?

If having a RJ is the only way to serve a market, then a lot of cities are doomed for service. I can't imagine that there would be enough of a demand for EWR-TOL service to justify a few RJ flights a day. On the other hand, CO didn't think CAK-EWR would work, and pulled out of CAK altogether, only to watch FL enter with CAK-LGA service. My understanding is that they've never had to draw on the subsidy that was used to start the service!

I think "irrational prop fear syndrome" is a regional problem. You'll find it more in snooty east coast and midwest areas, who feel they deserve jet service. Go farther into the midwest (west of Chicago), and the Pacific Northwest, and you'll find fewer flyer who have problems with props....

TOLtommy you are absolutely right, they think just because they are small they are not for the big cities.

CommutAir also has a hub in ALB and flies fron there to BGR. This is the service that I am familiar with. Today the morning flight left BGR with 9 pax and the evening flight is booked at 4 right now. They had a flight a couple of weeks ago opperated empty coming in. They also seem to be more prone to cancelations than COex out of PWM.

CO's CLE hub has fewer banks operating on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and especially on Saturdays. This could be (part of) the reason for the differance in schedules. Otherwise it might just be a schedule adjustment for certain cities that have been slipping in boardings lately.

TO put this to rest, this is the facts, the jan and feb schedules will be reduced due to CoEx pilots that were offered a job at commutair as part of the deal of flyin out of a Continental hub are getting recalled and going back quicker then new FO's can get trained. So this means that by march the schedule will be back up, adjusted for demand..(realize that a 1900 only needs 4-7 rev passengers depending on the routes yield).

THIS also means there will be jobs opening up..

Jayspilot, thanks informative message, but I do ask myself who would fly a turboprop through CLE, an airport that really doesn't offer a zillion times and destinations, when they can fly an RJ through ORD, CVG, PIT, DTW from most of the B1900 cities? Heck, even CVG-CLE is now only served by a B1900, competing against CRJs and 737s on DL. I recognize the turpoprops are just as safe, but they are slow and noisy, often have terrible restroom facilities.
