This may have been discussed before but I could not find anything by doing a search.

What small cities or towns have lost all of their commercial airline service due to cutbacks in the last 2 years??

I can think of only one here in the Great Lakes area...that being Youngstown, Ohio. YNG used to be served by NW Airlink from DTW.

AA Eagle was ready to pull out of GGG, but they were able to get an agreement with county officials and still have 3-4 daily flights to DFW. They are the only carrier at GGG; I am surprised that AA decided to stay because TYR is just a short 30-45 minute drive. Actually, I think airport officials at TYR and GGG could easily combine their efforts and build a joint Tyler-Longview airport that could get RJ service to several destinations. However, TYR just finished construction of a brand-new terminal, so I doubt it will happen anytime soon.

Mansfield, OH used to have commercial service. The terminal still shows signs that airlines once served it. The ticket counters are still there.

YNG is served by US Airways Express from PIT with the B1900 i believe (Air Midwest, Mesa).

Wheeling, WV (HLG) was served by capital with Dc-3's a long time back  Wink/being sarcastic

Washington Co. Airport, PA (AFJ)
was served by a carrier i cant remember back in the 70's and 80's with Beech 99's.

I believe Latrobe, PA; Johnstown, PA; Lancaster, PA; and Morgantown, WV are going to be losing their US Airways Express services. But thats the current rumor at PIT.

Sorry ATCT, but it doesn't appear that US is flying into YNG anymore either. I checked the US website, and got this response:

"Service from YOUNGSTOWN/WARR, OH to PITTSBURGH, PA is not available on usairways.com. Please change selected cities."

The wonderful article in Airways Magazine several months ago about Texas International Airways talked about their route structure. Back in their "treetop airlines" days, they flew to:

FST Ft. Stockton
CZT Carrizo Springs/Crystal City
BWD Brownwood
MWL Mineral Wells

Once they pared down their route structure and moved from the DC-3 to the DC-9, these towns never saw scheduled airline service again.

Kinston, North Carolina (ISO)

I used to fly Piedmont 727's and 737's to Kinston both nonstop from Atlanta and from LaGuardia via Washington National. ISO was a busy airport! USAirways ended all service to Kinston and the large terminal now stands empty. Grass is beginning to grow through the cracks in the parking lot pavement. Very sad...

Where are you from? I'll be moving back to AUS in January.

Actually, BWD still has scheduled air service; Mesa flies 3 B1900s to DFW each day. I can't believe that FST and CZT had service back in the day -- there's nothing there now!

Probably super-nonsignificant to all of you out there, but I'll throw this one in anyways since it's outside the US...  Big grin

A very small airline called Air Hudik (Hudik being the nickname of the town where their base was located) flew passengers in a Piper Navajo from ESNH to ARN a couple of times a day, but ceased operation a few years ago. They also flew charters and even had mail-service to ARN with a couple of Shorts 330's or 360's. The reason for not existing anymore is that SAS flies MD's and 737's to SDL, a city located not far away.

Too bad that these small airlines just disappear.  Sad

I remember working those PI 72s and 73s into ISO and it was a busy airport. We were always full, or close to it.

Does anyone know if Scholes International Airport at Galveston (GLS) ever had commercial service? They claim to be an "International Airport".

Another intersting claim they make is

GLS offers two 6,001' x 150' runways able to accommodate almost any aircraft, up to a Boeing 767.
If a 767 had to make an emergency landing with most of it's fuel still on board, and a full load otherwise - 6001' doesn't leave much margin for error does it?

How does this happen? an airport that once filled 727's and 737's now has no air service at all? Hard to imagine.

Rkmcswain -

Regarding Galveston calling themselves an International Airport. Many airports has the abbreviation INTL after the airport name on for example sectional charts. This means that it is an airport of entry (AOE) for foreign aircraft (even non-commercial).

And yeah, 6000 ft would be a tight shot for any 767 with any sort of useful load of fuel onboard...  Big grin

Metro Airlines did fly into Galveston from IAH as well as CLC (Clear Lake City).
In Idaho: Coeur d' Alene, Burley, Gooding have had air service at one time. I have a June '78 AirOregon timetable, and they served 24 cities in Oregon. Today, only 7 Oregon cities receive airline service.
Also Stockton,Concord,Palmdale,Napa,San Rafel,Palo Alto,Santa Rosa,Eureka(Murray Field),Marysville,South Lake Tahoe,Ukiah,Yreka(Siskiyou Co.),Red Bluff,Borrego Springs,Palm Desert, are some California cities IO can think of now that have had airline service. Many in Nevada also, thanks to Air Chaparral in 1980 had service.
Just look through any old OAG and you will see many, many, many cities that had service.

I have an old West Coast timetable that listed an Idaho Falls to Tacoma,WA service with two connections and 11 stops: IDA-PIH-BYI-TWF-BOI xfer -ONO-BKE-LGD-ALW x fer - PSC-YKM-BFI-TAC. All in DC-3 comfort!!
