Is an AZ 772 supposed to takeover the MXP-MIA route? I noticed that the MD-11 was switched back over to the 763 (at least the few times I have seen it come in recently). I thought that when the MD-11 left, the 777 would be coming in its place...thanks!

Alitalia's last Miami flight with an MD-11 took off on 30 November. When it landed in Milan the next morning, it was the last ever Alitalia MD-11 passenger service. For December there is the downgrade (and the likely oversold flights, since a 767 is way too small for the market) to the 767 until they can get a 777 on the route, which is, as mentioned, 1 January 2004.
Alitalia's Miami flight is an excellent performer for them. Italians represent the largest European immigrant group in Miami, with over 200,000 Italians in South Florida, and more than 40,000 of them were born there. Though the reason that the flight is profitable for Alitalia is not high loads and oversold flights (which don't equate to a profit), but because of profitable cargo yields and high premium class demand, both thanks to the fashion industry. That is why MIA is getting the 777 over markets with even stronger Italian ties, like Boston.

First the 747 then the MD-11, 767, MD-11 again for a few days, and now back to the 767 and soon the 777. They've kept it interesting for us which is a good thing and besides (I love the Alitalia scheme)

As of now, the 767 suits BOS well, and with the removal of the MD-11 from the fleet, it should stay that way. AZ announced an upgrade from the 767 to the MD-11 for Summer 2002 but that only lasted about two or three weeks before the flight was relegated back to a 763. It wouldn't surprise me to see the 777 make an appearance or two over the next few weeks as the New England Italian community is generally pretty mobile and a large percentage of the them do travel back to Italy, especially during the holidays, due to the utilization of the 777 fleet and routes with higher priority (JFK, MIA, etc), I doubt if BOS is going to see the 777 in AZ colours anytime soon. It's pretty sad because the 777 has found a bit of a niche with trans-Atlantic carriers with BA, AA, and AF all finding success with the aircraft into the city.

Well, Alitalia's 9th 777-200ER was delivered yesterday, EI-DBM. It will allow Miami to welcome AZ's 777s soon. Alitalia is the third 772 operator at MIA, joining American Airlines and El Al (LY will soon be using 744s too, though, which is nothing to complain about. Starting mid-Jan, 772s on Tuesdays, 744s on Thursdays. During the summer, 744s on both days).
