Yesterday, 15th December 2003, EDW979 from Mombasa reported flaps problems prior to its landing at ZRH. Apparently, the landing flaps could not be deployed and a high speed landing was carried out. Also see

You can clearly see the flaps not being deployed and full thrust reverse is applied. After checking the landing gear on the runway itself and there was nothing found wrong, the aircraft was cleared to taxi to the arrival gate on its own power. Another incident which doesn't really help to improve the reputation. Things can go wrong though...

I'm glad nothing worse happened. Poor Edelweiss, they've certainly had their share of bad luck with their A332. I wish them the best of luck for the future, I've always thought they were one of the best charter airlines around and I've flown on HB-IQZ twice.

On another forum, somebody said, that the pilot requested the fire brigades to check the break temperaturse. It was below the critical value (it was 180 °C, IIRC), so the aircraft could proceed to its designed gate.

Indeed, bad luck for Edelweiss this year. Luckily, nothing more serious happened. At least I think so, as HB-IQZ departed yesterday evening for its next flight.

Cheers
Gerardo

Naahhh, Robin! Just pay me a beer next time, and I won't hate you  Smile/happy/getting dizzy

Pretty understandable reaction. Such occurences are a plague for an airline. I bet, we will see a huge news coverage this evening in the TV news......

Gerardo, you're right...there's nothing more in this world that Swiss media like doing more than bashing their home airlines. Just imagine the uproar if the airline involved had been SWISS instead of Edelweiss...

Indeed very bad for Edelweiss ... !

I once had the "pleasure" to sit in a Swissair 743 which had problems with the flaps after t/o from ZRH to ATL. After dumping fuel over France we had to return to ZRH. They where not able to insert the flaps (which is still better than not being able to deploy them).

Robin, I've flown Edelweiss only once but will never fly again! It has nothing to do with the incidents they've suffered but their service was not as good as everybody said. It was CMB-MLE-ZRH, and when entering the aircraft at CMB, it was like entering a garbage dump area. After take-off from CMB when asking for a cup of coffee, the arrogant answer was that coffee is only served after we've left MLE...
I fully understand your decision!

By the way, next Saturday is the planned departure day of Royal Brunei A320!

Robin: Unfortunately, I can't make it to the airport this saturday. My wife has to work, and so I have to look for my little girl. If weather is good, perhaps I go on SAT or SUN to the heliport with her for an hour or so.

But I will be on the tour of 27th. Will you be there?

Just heard on Swiss radio that they had another incident yesterday (Dec. 17). Apparently, they had hydraulic problems and had to return to ZRH shortly after take-off. It took them 10 hours to get the problem sorted out so the plane could head to Punta Cana. Anyone have any more details?

Although nobody was hurt, they had a very serious incident at MIA this past August:

Today's EDW A330 flight to Cuba is delayed by about eight hours due to late arrival of the airplane. No wonder, they had to fix the problems yesterday.

I know someone who's booked on this flight. I just called him to tell the good news. Well, he's not that happy...
